The Lexus card doesn't work with a Remote Start module. You'd need the button FOB for that (or the cell phone add-on). For opening the truck and starting it, the proximity sensors will pick up the Lexus card signal. To unlock and start, all you do is touch the handle and push the start/stop button. To lock, hit the lock button on the door, or the two little lines on the outside door handle. Should work the same as the FOB, but without the buttons. Assuming that you have the Toyota Smart Key feature.

Not even. Not carrying around a fob everyday is priceless. How often do you remote start? I have my 2 original fobs if I'm in a situation when I need it, like at my house or a ski hotel. Besides, op said he was getting the app control, so he could remote start from his phone. :notsure:

BTW, for anyone installing remote start, Accessorides has full takeover, so the engine doesn't shut off. See here . Newer Gen 3.3 Tacos will require the one here.

Hello, 2023 Tacoma Off Road. I lost one of two key fobs. I'm interested in programming a new key fob myself. I need to buy a good scan tool anyway - instead of renting a scan tool from Tom's Keys, can I instead buy my own scan tool and do it myself? If so, any scan tool recs that will work?

    Thank you.

Factory remote start is kind of worthless. You have to be very close and as soon as you open the door it shuts off.

Hi,haven’t posted in a while. My situation is my Tacoma 2016 was totaled, and it took a long time to find replacement. I ended up having to go almost 4 hrs away and upgraded to a 23. I really miss my 16, because the 23 you need the Toyota app and you need to use apple play and you don’t have navigation, weather etc w/o paying a monthly fee. So the dealership was giving me one key said second was lost (?) I insisted they owed me a key— so they sent me one after the fact, however of course it doesn’t work. It was ordered for the truck and appears to be cut correctly. If I go to local dealership they will charge me $90, if I go to the 4 hr away dealership getting there will cost me ~ $90 just in tolls, and can’t be sure they won’t charge me for programming. Can this key be programmed by a locksmith?
Reading this forum it sounds like it is possible- but I don’t see where anyone mentions the year 2023, I am familiar with the mega differences between the 16 and the 23.

What can happen if you go and have a key (fob) programmed and it gets messed up, so that the original key(fob) your replacement key (fob) and the truck don’t sync?

I've used Tom's Key Programmer before... To that end, you will need one working key to do anything. You cannot erase all keys. You CAN erase all but one key. You can ADD keys. This ensures that one key is always synced with your vehicle.

I added three non-OEM fobs that I got for like $40 each. I never got the blades cut, since I have push-to-start. I have one fob with a cut key, plus the tailgate key. I added a pop-n-lock so that I won't need a key to unlock the tailgate.

    About Tom's Keys.
If you choose to use their programmer, be sure to buy a new fob, or one that is known to be unlocked.
If you buy a used fob, abeit the correct one, but it's locked, Tom's programmer won't work.
Your locksmith can unlock it, but you'll be out of luck with Tom's gadget.

Tom's Keys is certainly better than the dealer and I than you guys for the recommendation, but you know how many times I had to do this with my Tesla! NOT ONCE!
