I am going to rebuild a set of King CO's. Has anyone converted King coilovers from standard travel to extended travel when rebuilding them? I know with Icons you simply replace the spacer inside with one that is one inch shorter. How does this work in Kings? I searched and found a few others asking the same thing with zero replies.

Just for reference, I called Down South Motorsports this morning. The guy I talked to said that with Kings, it is just a matter of removing the spacer inside the shock. It does not need to be replaced with a shorter one the way Icons do.

    howdy:hattip:

Reviving this old thread to see if you actually were able to do this when you rebuilt your kings. I’m probably picking up a set of used kings and would like to do the same:thumbsup:

I actually didn’t end up rebuilding them. I went to test fit them and it turned out the top plate was for a tundra o_O So I ended up selling them on Craigslist for a loss :(

Just be sure you know which spacer can be removed. Not all "spacers" can be removed and not all spacers look the same.

I have one coilover torn down and this is what it looks like.

I haven’t been able to find much info beside the thread I already linked. Is the spacer above the rubber bushing / bump stop the one to be removed? It measures 1/4”

my other (still assembled) coilover measures just under 4 1/4” stroke if that helps identify anything.

Yes, although I am not 100% sure what shock that is. You can always call King to confirm this info.

King got back to me via email and confirmed (most likely) that these are 1st gen taco coilovers. I had sent them some pics with measurements.

they also confirmed that these are already extended travel because there is only one internal floating spacer. I used this pic, so if you have two spaces here you have standard travel. If you have one spacer, then you have extended travel.

He also mentioned that my seal heads are an old style and that the newer version has a built in bump stop.
