Hey guys! So it’s been a few months being a 16 Tacoma owner and I am on the books to get the Krown treatment done in January (called in October they were that far booked out) anyway I was scrolling through a Facebook group yesterday and read that to qualify for frame replacement in the future (if it be needed) that it can’t have anything on it other then the factory CRC coating? Is this true? The post also said 3rd gen owners would be getting letters soon about this.

I got my letter from Toyota a few months ago. I think you qualify by area and VIN #. My dealer will start the application of the factory CRC coating in March. Mine is a 2017. The letter states that if you don't get the CRC coating done within 2 years, you won"t be eligible for the frame replacement coverage. Someone posted a copy of the letter in another thread. Not all states are included. Like AZ, NM, or TX.

I’d get the Krown treatment and skip the Toyota service and frame warranty. That black snot they want Joey to smear on your dirty frame is guaranteed to rot it into nothing, just after their extended warranty ends. It’s a fail. I’ve seen trucks with it applied, and it’s a horror of rust under the Toyota CRC coating.

I get Corrosion-Free (similar to Krown) applied to my truck yearly and there is no way whatever BS product Toyota will apply would stick any longer unless they steam and pressure wash the entire underside.

Edit: Unless of course, Toyota has smartened up and is also using some sort of waxy-oil type product. Then I'm all for it.

I just called my dealer about it, and they are usually on top of everything, but I am the first person to have called them asking questions about this letter. Also, the first time they had heard about it. Looks like anyone getting their 3rd gen inspected and sprayed is a long way off still.

Fake news. It is ok to get the krown treatment (highly recommend it), but If you ever get the letter to get toyotas crc, then do that as well. The frame denial will happen only if you DID NOT do toyotas crc, if you received a letter to do so. I asked my dealer this very question, because I do krown treatments annually.

What might be the downside, or problems, with the upcoming Toyota CRC treatment?

I'm in CA, which isn't listed as one of the "reported" states. The letter I got doesn't say anything about needing to get protection within two years or my warranty is void. My letter just says [tl;dr], "Your warranty is extended. If your frame isn't rotting, do nothing. If you're concerned, take it to the dealership. Now tear out this page that extends your frame warranty to 12 years and put it in your owners manual."

OP, as you live in Central PA, and your appointment is in January, be sure you go to a car wash a week or so before your appointment to wash the salt/brine off really well, and give it a chance to dry off.

In my observation, this is not far off from normal with the Toyota CRC. What a horror for this poor fella:

Thank you everyone for your input it’s answered all my questions and than some! And Good point for sure! That’s my biggest fear of doing it in January I was going to see how they work that as far as cleaning it first closer to the time of my appointment.

Typical, I just came across this thread, Did they forget to apply anti corrosion at the assembly again like generation 1? I had a first gen, live in salts ville and after 20 years, the frame rusted but didnt fail. my krown application when new was done at dealer. I climbed under there and could literally see the same bs this guy posted. Went back and literally saw from a distance the touch ups were being done with a hand held can that can be bought in a hardware store. The warranties of krown are bs.

Wow. How Effin hard is it to source powder coated frames? Seems like Toyota is wasting a lot of money by cutting corners.

Look at it this way. If you get it Krowned yearly, then you will never need a frame replacement and not have to through all the bullcrap from the dealership plus it will have a lot higher resale if rustfree. Win -win situation for a little over $100 yearly + piece of mind knowing you are looking after your investment

Powder coating isn't the magic cure all that people think it is. It's fine for aunt Beth's patio furniture, but really isn't going to do shit when your Toyota frame is rotting from the inside out.

    Can confirm.

Have powder-coated MetalCloak tube fenders on my Jeep TJ. It really is a dogshit finish.
