That's probably an inevitable next step. :( I need to call the new local shop tomorrow. Let them know the 3rd member was inspected and found to be just fine.

Doesn't explain why the noise disappeared the first 700 miles I put on this last 3rd member. No noise at all during that 500 mile break-in.

    It's all so frustrating.

Maybe there is some much crap residual in the axle shaft part of the housing. They say they spray out the diff housing, maybe it took 500 miles to wash enough of the crap back into the diff.

It's probably time for Dana 60's front and rear. While your at that maybe try out one of those new cummins repower crate engines.

While I understand the PITA you deal with without your truck, I would re-consider the offer to let him break it in. Doing that will give you confidence that the 3rd member is good. Then if you re-install and get the noise you "know" it's not the 3rd member, but something in the case/axles.

Other than I've done 3 break-ins myself already. In all three cases I did it properly and things looked fine each time. The 2nd diff (which the previous shop still has) was said to be in perfect shape (although they didn't disassemble it). This third diff which ECGS rebuilt was perfect as well. I specifically asked Lee (shop foreman) if he could see any signs at all that I hadn't broken it in properly. He said no. So I'm not at all worried about break in. I'm more worried about having my truck so I can transport my children and my dog like a real grown up.

I've asked the new shop here in town to inspect the wheel bearings when they are putting the diff back together. ECGS says the Tacoma has sealed diff bearings. So in theory, if they're really messed up, we might see it. However, if they're good, we probably won't see anything at all. We'll see what happens. But wheel bearings is the next check box should the noise continue. Also, I'm going to have the new shop thoroughly clean out the diff to make sure there's no metal in there to start things off.

Ok, new shop just called. Rear 3rd showed up a day early. They got it installed. Waiting on me to bring turn my Lucas oil tomorrow morning.

They pulled the wheel bearings out of the rear I guess. Talked to the actual mechanic. He says the bearings are good. Nothing wrong there. He wants to test drive the truck with me once we get the oil in to see if we hear anything

Big let down this morning. When I talked to the new mechanic Monday (yesterday) I told him I'd bring him the Lucas 85W-140 oil this morning. He said once he got the oil in the rear end he wanted to take a test drive with me to see if it makes any noise.

So I left home early to stop by the mechanic shop (other end of the city) before I go to work. Go in to drop off the oil. And... he doesn't work Tue/Wed. Wish he'd have told me that yesterday. So my truck is sitting in their lot all day today and tomorrow because the mechanic assigned to my job doesn't work these two days. All it needs is oil in the diff and it's ready to go.

Was hoping I'd have gotten my truck back today. :( Bummed.

LOL Right? I even made an appointment with my veterinarian for my dog on Thursday thinking I'd have my truck. Gonna have to reschedule now. Can't transport my kids in the truck I'm borrowing.

Yeah. But if I wasn't borrowing the vehicle I'm borrowing I'd have to RENT a vehicle for the 3 weeks it's been so far.
