They have been using zinc and steel but the steel ones rust. Zinc and tungsten are used but tungsten is pricey. The stock weights on my tacoma are zinc. They arent as pliable but similar in weight. The problem i have with zinc is it is still poisonous. Not so much to people as much as pets. Our bodies need zinc but too much is bad.

Pennies and other small coins are sometimes ingested by dogs, resulting in the need for medical treatment to remove the foreign body. The zinc content of some coins can cause zinc toxicity, which is commonly fatal in dogs, where it causes a severe hemolytic anemia, and also liver or kidney damage; vomiting and diarrhea are possible symptoms.

lol no just dont feed them to your dog. How many people eat wheel weights haha. Im saying whats the point of replacing toxic lead with toxic zinc? Zinc is safer but still ITS ON THE WHEEL!!! Im sure as hell not going to eat it and its not like its water soluble and i wouldnt drink out of puddles on the side of the road if it was so wheres the harm?...

wow. no lead wheel weights and were just going to replace them with another potentially toxic metal. That makes sense!

Depleted uranium would be a very good wheel weight.

It is already used in, among other things, elevator counterweights.

(ETA: I'm saying this as a retort for the environmentalists that want to ban lead, not because I actually want to use DU as a wheel weight.)

It's also a cathode metal used to prevent other metals from oxidizing. It's what we call "sacrificial" and will slowly erode.
