I wish I had an answer so this could be filed in the resolved section but yeah, have no idea why my 2002 is fine without the need for soldering. Very strange.

Same here. Mine works fine with an LED in the dome and map lights. Without soldering anything to it

This seems like the best way to go right? will the door function still work as normal?

Hey guys this thread seems dead but thought I would ask anyway i have this same problem kind of. so I have a 2003 tacoma and I have a 100 ohm 5 watt resistor on my dome light and the light works when the switch is in the one postion but not when it is in the door position with the truck off any ideas? Do I need resistors on the map lights too ?

Yeah, easy to do yourself. I went to MicroCenter and got a pack of 1W 100ohm resistors and soldered 2 of them together and just wrapped them around the prongs of the dome light (you don't have to solder them, In fact, I may recommend against you doing so, as I've had them come unsoldered if the light is on for an extended period of time due to heat from the resistors). I'm using these absolute beasts of a led replacement in the dome and both the map lights. It's an extremely tight fit in the Map mights, but it is possible if you work with it enough.

Yeah I'm using the 5 watt resistor to not have the high heat that comes with the 1 watt resistors.
do you have the resistors on the map lights also?

You can if you want them to always work, but No, I only put it on the dome light. If the truck is off, as long as the dome light is on, the map lights work fine and I can't think of a valid situation where I would have the truck off and need the map light without the dome light. If I want light then I want all the light lol.

Yeah my problem is that with the resistor on the Led and the dome light switched to the on postion the light works but not in the door postion with the door open. Trying to make the Led light work in the door postion like the stock light did.

Hmmm… make sure both screws are in good and making a good ground (negative) connection, I believe I had a similar problem while I was experimenting and figured out I need to screw the dome light firmly to get good ground, I think the connector for the dome light is two separate positives.

I have the led dome light with a resistor from @csjumper2003, and it has the flickering issue from time to time. It mostly works fine, but if I leave the dome light on the door setting, and leave the door open for a while it begins to flicker. Any idea why?

It also flickers when turned to "on" on the dome light, if it starts flickering on the "door" setting.

Edit: I just was out messing with the dome light again. It started flickering after being on for a while, so I removed the cover to see what I could do. When it flickers, 3 of the 6 led lights in the bulb would go out, and the other 3 would flicker. I wonder if that indicates a defect in the bulb, or that is just how an led light reacts when there is some other issue going on...

I also wonder if I put the old incandescent bulb back in if the flickering would happen, or is that just something that happens with led bulbs? The oem incandescent bulb is just so pathetically dim...

Electronics leave me scratching my head...

I had an issue where the resistor got stupid hot and melted my solder joints, but yeah I wouldn't leave the lights on for an extended period of time, resistors get HOT.
