Trying to get an LED interior/dome light for my 98. There are several different ones, and I noticed sometimes people have trouble with them lighting up when the key is out of the ignition (but doors open).

Any links/suggestions to bulbs that work, plug and play?

I just want a standard bright white one.

I was looking at getting one of these:

    https://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1..._electrical/dome_light_bulb.html#immersedview

    or one of these:

Simple test: close the door and look at the dome light. Does it dim, and fade to dark or just switch off. If it goes off, it is not controlled by Body ECU, but straight by the door switches and no problem installing any LEDs. If it dims (usually with a slight delay), it is controlled by Body ECU and then selecting a LED bulb is a gamble.

I just bypassed that stupid ECU/intergration relay.

Did you just jumper the door switch negative to the dome light to bypass the BCM? Or how did you achieve this?

I went and got one at O'reillys and seems to work fine. The sylvania (zevo or something). Nice white/blueish color, works fine, on/off no problem with the door and no ignition. Not that much brighter though.

Opened up the integration relay and solder a jumper wire across #4 and #12 see pic then cut trace underneath and resistor leg. Dome light bypass1.jpg Dome light bypass.jpg

I didn't cut the wires from the front connector. Just tied into them. I still wanted my door buzzer to work.

I went the bulb replacement route on my 99 over the whole light replacement.
Tried the Sylvania bulb from AZ and was unimpressed with little to no added light over factory mini bulb performance.
Found superbtightleds.com purchased 6 led bulb as well as other bulbs.
Super easy installation and the brightness is amazing over factory !20180622_082539.jpg 20180622_082607.jpg

His ^ would because the 99s don't have a body control module it would run through.

That part number on the bulb packet didn't come up. I did see this website before and was skeptical of the price/value, good to hear they're working.

Think ours is the #3175, so what about these two:

    https://www.superbrightleds.com/mor...175-led-bulb-4-led-festoon-30mm-car/231/1083/

    https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/festoon/de3175-led-bulb-4-smd-led-festoon-30mm-car/2107/

Didn't see the 6 bulb LED. I'll probably just order both and see which works better since they're so cheap.

That is only 40lm - about the same as stock bulb. I think biggest bung for bucks is 3110-W10-CB (https://www.superbrightleds.com/mor...d-bulb-10-smd-led-festoon-31mm-car/2261/5144/). It is 95lm. This is what I have in my dome housing in my 4Runner.

I have also "9w Cree LED 31mm Canbus No Error Festoon License Plate Interior Map White Lights" that were modified to output true 480 lumens but they went to 4Runner tailgate. Each one takes almost 5W (with over 3W in LED chips) and that is to much for tiny Tacoma housing. My "Bismarck" tailgate housing is big, open with plenty of cooling. This is how two of these bulbs run in there:

But IMHO it will be overkill for dome light anyway - you don't want to blind yourself while driving at night and looking for something on the passenger sit. From my experience 95 lumen is plenty enough for dome light. I don't have a picture from my Tacoma, but it is how 95 lumen bulb shines in my Bismarck.

Ok I saw the 95 lumen bulb but it's canbus, isn't that for the newer tacos with the daytime running lights or something? Would it still work in my 98?

CANBUS is another marketing BS. What it means there is a resistor in series with the bulb. It is to cheat the "burned bulb detection". LED bulbs sellers use the term CANBUS completely wrong. CANBUS is a data buss between devices (computers) in a car. I have not seen any computer inside the bulb yet.

However modern cars (I think that started with European high-shelf cars like BMD Mercedes and Audi) there is a "burned bulb" detection circuit in computer controlling lights. If the light controlling computer detects an "open circuit" in a light, it will send the signal to the main computer about burned bulb and that will light a Christmas tree on you dash or display a text message on the dash panel. To cheat such detection (simple LED driver which would trigger the computer detection system) "CANBUS" LED bulbs have a resistor inside the bulb circuit that lets some current run through it. If resistance is low enough, the computer will not trigger the alarm. Similar thing for using resistors with LED blinkers to prevent hyper-flashing.

For our trucks that have no "burned bulb detection" circuit (except in blinkers - flasher is detecting low current) such "CANBUS" resistor does nothing except turning some current into heat. Whenever I am able to, I remove the "CANBUS" resistor from LED bulbs - less heat.
