    Hi all,

My first post here and planning to buy a 2020 TRD Off-Road.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to upgrade to good LED lights later if I purchase without the LED lighting package.

Can I upgrade to OEM LED lights (and how expensive is this) later on?
Or can I get equally good quality with aftermarket LED lights?
Any other thoughts on pros/cons for the LED lighting package?

Thanks a lot and I hope this question hasn't been asked/answered before - I've been trying to find a clear answer by searching...

I think the general consensus is to do it at the factory because it's way cheaper. Isn't it like a 500$ add on?

Yes, you're totally right it's only about $500. I'm looking for an uncommon build (TRD Off-Road Access cab) and they are hard to come by so limited package options. There may be one available without the lighting package in a month, but otherwise I can probably do a factory order to get exactly what I want.

    Thank you!

If you click the quote button to the bottom right, it'll reply directly to the person you're speaking with! My advice is to wait for the one you want, I love the proportions of an access cab. Good luck!

The key piece of your question may actually be "how good are the OEM LED headlights". TW happens to have a lighting expert who is presently testing a set of these and should be able to give an objective and scientific analysis within the coming weeks or months. Many of us are highly interested in the details.

Another part of the question may be "how reliable are the OEM LED headlights" which is maybe the most difficult question to answer and will require time to pass before we have good statistics on product lifetime. They aren't something you will want to change on a regular basis, both due to cost and installation difficulty.

With all of that said, the most significant factor in your decision may boil down to the relative performance of OEM LED vs non-LED options. To that question I refer you to IIHS:

    https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/tacoma-crew-cab-pickup/2020#headlights

Note, that upgrading the stock halogen with high efficiency H11 or H9 bulbs does significantly improve low beam performance which is the key component of the Marginal rating for non-LED headlights.

Upgrade cost from halogen to OEM LED is roughly $1600 + semi significant labor and shrug on warranty coverage.

Bottom line, you'll likely hear some encouragement to pursue OEM LED's from this crowd of enthusiasts but if you simply can't make it happen, or if the price jump is $2k + and includes nothing else you want, you have other options.

Yeah, in order to option LED you have to get a $$ premium / tech package and all that jazz for the +500 add on option. haven't seen them as an option without the premium package unless you special build one but even then sometimes it won't allow you to add just the headlights without the other add on so 500 plus the prem package will run a few grand in all

Damn I never knew that! I've just seen people refer to it as a no brainier for 500$.

If you are in the southeast you can only get the LED package with the Premium upgrade.

You could always buy a truck in a different region with just the LED lights and have it shipped for cheaper

Thanks very useful information on this. I'll do my best to get the LED package. If not it's great to know about the high-efficiency bulbs.

Yes it's very complicated and the dealers I talked to also said it varies by region. I'm in northern California and just had a dealer put in a request for a factory order. He went ahead with it but said you never know if they approve or not until you get the reply (sometimes weeks later)!
