I have not found additional waterproofing needed for camping. But a bed mat helps keep things dry. Pack your stuff in bins

The best screens for side and back is a overall screen room drape. A Screen tent over the entire rear of the truck and ST.

Curtains? When a Softopper is closed up, it's closed up!

Interested in y’alls opinions for the best brand of soft top — and WHY. Many people just say “Softopper 100%, Bestop sucks, Softopper so much better quality and in every way possible”, but does not elaborate any further.

Please and thank you very much!

    I chose softopper cause

    1. it doesn’t have the higher ridge like bestop so I thought it looks better
    2. Since it doesn’t have a higher ridge, it’ll tuck up next to my bed rack better (my truck is too tall and that’s the highest I could set my rack for my garage)

mainly those two affected my decision

I hate to sound like that guy, but my decision to go with Softopper, vs other canvas tops, was purely aesthetic. I like how Bestop has the side windows, but I couldn’t get past the upper bar pushing the top of the canvas upward, creating that hump look.

There are several options/variations for canvas tops, each with their pros and cons. I ultimately took this route, vs hard tops, due to functionality and then price.

My thoughts all summed up for the Bestop 2 on an MGM 3rd Gen:
    1. I love the look of both, but at the time of buying the bestop was easier and cheaper to get.
    2. After seeing it in person and on the truck, I've come to like the humpi-ness of the canopy vs the sleek look of the softopper, to me it just adds more angles and makes the truck look more rugged and aggressive with the other goodies I've already installed.
    3. I like having the ability to take off the sidewalls and back flap to go "safari mode", and this will allow me the ability to create screen windows I can install in place of the walls for my pets hanging out in the "basement" as we'll have RTT on top.
    4. I've noticed the rear bar is a big deterrent for a lot of people, as you have to remove it to gain full access to the bed. I never really understood this, takes all of 15 seconds to unhook the bottom canopy and then pull the bar out? Never bothered me, idk just me I guess.
    5. I've never owned a softopper but I've seen a number of them in person and for me the bestop just suits my want and needs better, nothing but good things to stay about it.
    6. Depending on your needs/ wants you probably can't go wrong with either choice. Everyone's picky and has an opinion so it's hard to get a solid answer until you yourself get some hands-on experience with one or the other.

Added note: mine was a used unit sale and there isn't a single problem with it, it's in great quality shape and I'm sure if I condition it properly every year, I'll get a lot of use out of it.

Some pics of the install in safari mode. (BTW love the uptop truss bed rack, such an easy installation).

alwaysHI, hxp05560, auuzzyy, thank y’all very much. That was very helpful for sure.

I thought the newer Bestop (the “bestop supertop for truck 2” — which almost sounds like a silly name on a fake chinese product, lol) got rid of the hump? I thought I read that… I do agree, that kinda looks weird…but, this has made me now consider Bestop. I just want one already, dammit!

Though, @Auuzzyy , you say you like the ability to remove the side and back for safari mode — but can’t you do that with Softopper, too..?

The softopper allows you to roll up the sides to go into “safari mode”.

Okay so ST can only roll up whereas BT can completely remove?

You can only remove the front and rear windows. You can roll up the sides and rear windows. Rumored to increase horsepower. So that along with a few stickers could quite possibly turn your truck into a ten second quarter miler. At least that’s the rumor. Haven’t tested that rumor yet myself.
Edit: I’m assuming you already know about being able to fold it down or easily remove it in a few minutes.

Absolutely love the soft topper. Got it about a month ago from a user here and I couldn’t be happier.

The Softopper can be folded forward and out of the way for Many open bed applications. And it can be completely removed with just undoing the snaps and sliding past two pins. Either action takes less than 3 minutes time.

Refitting is just as simply, and hardly more time consuming.

The Bt is a pain on these same tasks!

I think most people just like the look of Softopper better, plus it's marginally less expensive and easier/quicker to fold forward . That or they don't care for or want the side windows. They are owned by the same company so the quality can't be too far off from one another. Also, after seeing how quickly the rear window on my Softopper fogged over I'm glad I don't have any extra plastic windows on this thing.
