I get at least 20 on the highway, and I am retired. Also, I’d been wanting to take a west-US road trip for a while,
now; I just decided I’d find a good deal somewhere and then that would be my first destination/excuse to go.

    — MO not MS ;) , but yes indeed it’ll be a nice drive.

I went Softtopper route cause my Dad has had one on his F350 for almost 5yr & it’s held up very well in Alaska. Jus yesterday day was running around & parked next to stock Tacoma & when I came out this was parked next to me. I’ve been telling my daughter we were going camping when I get mine & she saw this one & said we needed All that stuff & i said No..

I see you've already made your choice, congrats! I'm just to add some more info here for any others that may see this in the future.

The Bestop 2 (dumb name lol) did get rid of the nasty hump in the middle, for the most part. You can still see a bit of a bump but I'd say it's pretty close to that of the softopper.
The side windows actually have a canvas loop inside so you can either fully remove the side walls, or just undo the side zippers and roll it up just like the softopper, only thing is the bestop has corner sections that still attach from the "roof to the rail" whereas the softopper is just wide open.
The bestop does fold forward and just reuses the top tailgate zipper to snug everything down and compact it all.
The bestop 2 doesn't have actual side windows, just "walls". Which I prefer over the original bestop as I'd hate having more windows to deal with like HighCountryTacoma said.
The bestop has plastic inserts that fit into the rails on top of the bedrails vs the softoppers snaps, so if you wanted to fully remove the canvas with the tube framing but leave the rails on the truck you'd just need to pull out the canvas from the rails, disconnect the frame from the rails (basically what you're doing on the softopper) and then slide out the whole assembly from the front rail. After seeing how both are done softopper is definitely easier, but bestop isn't hard by any means.

Would I need any type of bed stiffener after installing a softopper or are they really light? I see the description on the website says 30 pounds but wanted to hear from real life experience. Any input is appreciated.

Shouldn’t need one for just a softopper, but if you put a bed rack on, with all the extras, then that would probably need it.

Probably not, but it doesn't hurt anything to run them, and it will stiffen up the bed a bit. I've got the Total Chaos ones, I got them use for super cheap. Keep an eye out for a good deal. Of nothing else, they're extra tie-down anchors.

Well, I haven't posted my setup in awhile so here's my finished product until the next time I change something.

Front and rear insulation pulls down to cover windows. Front and rear facing lights controlled from the cab and the bed. Ha.. you must have never tried getting something Shipped to Alaska. Where most companies tell you they only deliver to the “United States”, or shipping & billing address are different. The shipping on my Softopper was supposed to be almost 500$ but Super nice lady got creative & got me better deal. So ya “deliveries” are lil different Way up here.

Strung up this mesh cargo net. Thought it might be useful for little things or clothes while camping, we’ll see. If it sucks, only cost like $20 bucks.

Full trip was a week long. Ended up going to Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, and Canyonlands Nat’l parks (again…just can’t get enough of Utah), camped around them and in some National Forests as well. Totally worth it.
