    What hasn't been modified?
I used the the 4runner tranny and it bolted right up like it’s supposed to. All the electrical connected with no modification.
For the record I used a t4r tcase and electronic system. But the truck does not know the 4wd exists the 4wd ecu only gets neutral position and speed from the truck.

Ive searched around and didn't find more than the basics.. ive seen some dowels or some things that potentially could fall out.. I'd prefer to do a little homework.. Ive done plenty of wrenching but not a mechanic by trade

If you read the whole thread you will learn a lot of what works and what doesn't and find posts like this
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lets-see-your-fj-case-swap.455278/page-17#post-19064659

When you search you miss the stuff that has value but uses a different terminology than you used. A lot of the questions you have have already been answered or you'll be able to ask smarter questions

This is one of those mods that isn't straightforward. There are lots of variables depending on your specific truck and what else will be installed that needs to be considered. Are you going to clock it to gain clearance, put a crawl box behind it, use with a ADD or non-ADD setup, continue to use the stock locker or an aftermarket one? There's lots of ways to configure one and many have been discussed and you can see the specific concerns of that setup. If you follow one person's example it may end up causing problems for your setup. That's why I'm recommending you do a deep dive on this thread, you'll see several examples, can see which twin sticks work best for how you want to use them, and so forth.

there aren’t too many posts on taking apart the case. There are a few keys you can lose if you aren’t careful that need to go back the right way. I recommend the FSM and some medium tack assembly lube. It’s pretty straightforward the cases haven’t changed much since the early 90s when Toyota switched from the gear drive to the chain drive case. If you don’t have the FSM send me a pm and I’ll email them to you.

Being that it's a tacoma forum with an FJ part, you're likely only going to find people experienced with the mod that might not post about the whole 'how to:' a quick google and knowing where to look helps. No one is trying to talk down to you, but its generally a good indicator if someone is capable of a mod by the questions they ask.

In the future, you'll also get much more accurate searching is you google through the TW site. "site:tacomaworld.com XXXXX" being the XXXX is what you want to search. It will narrow search results specifically to TW. its generally easier to find info instead of the TW search function which only uses key words and puts them all into a thread display. These were two i found in less than a minute. there's likely more out there in the inter webs.

I found the write up on the fj forum a few days ago.. im skeptical about oppening the case and if the keys fall out having a hard time! I see it probably goes on the end of the shift rods... i think from pics

If you haven't read this one, then it's a good read with details on splitting the case for an input shaft swap.

As far as those keys go, just make sure in the case is in 2wd and then you should never even see them. I have split two FJ cases and a taco case and I couldn't even tell you where they go because they stayed where they were supposed to because I followed that 1 simple instruction.

You left the case in 2wd and oppened it all the way?.. no keys fell out? I seen a post on maybe t4r... i think and the guy cut the nub off from the top of the case covering the inside with a rag and then took the case apart partially just enough to pull the pill. Not sure how that works as far as keeping the case free or shavingsScreenshot_20200114-194802.jpg Screenshot_20200114-194820.jpg

Its a nice shortcut.. but I'm too paranoid I would probably like to take the whole thing apart

i wouldn’t go that route, that case exploded shortly thereafter.

Edit: the keys fell out doing this way so that’s why it blew up lol

Oh wow.. i guess its the reason you can't believe or follow everything you read
Is that where the keys sit? On the back of the shift rods where the notches are?

No problem. The FSM precautions against losing these keys. Some people like to take short cuts, and haste makes waste.

As mentioned, as long as the case is split in 2WD the keys remain captured by the synchro ring and shift fork.

Correct. I split all 3 cases, all of them while the case was in 2wd, and never saw any of the keys fall out. Like you, I was nervous about loosing those keys and getting them back in properly if they did happen to fall out, but it just wasn't an issue for me.

Well appreciate it! Thanks for the advise, I prefer not to do the first thing I see online and then end up blowing it by taking a shortcut. What you guys mentioned I guess help me out the most is to keep it in 2 wheel drive
