Now I need the parts list and steps to convert from key start to keyless.

    Any threads on that process?

*did not search this. Reading TWorld in bed before going to sleep. Searching takes time and I might be able to read one more post before she asks when I'm going to turn that off and go to sleep.

I found the part on partznet.com and not too bad of a price especially if they'll honor a 10% discount code. I tried looking up the techstream software and cord on Amazon and I'm not feeling like I'd pull the trigger on any of them as it looks like (from the comments and questions) older firmware that will only work with vehicles from 2010 and back. I think I'd feel better having a professional locksmith do it but saving money and going the DIY route is tempting. 80 bucks for 10 minutes of work that a computer is doing sounds a bit ridiculous. It just sounds like there's a learning curve with knowing how to use techstream and which version will work with the card and Tacoma. Do you know of a link for a techstream tutorial? :D

I agree it was a lot for not much work, but the upside was (especially since no one had done it on the Taco yet) that if the locksmith couldn't do it, he wouldn't charge, and I could return the key and not be out anything but return shipping. Although if I had access to a PC I may have tried myself, but we have been Mac users for almost 10 years now.
As far as a techstream tutorial and software version, I would follow the toyotanation link on the first post. He used version 10.00.028 which I did see on Amazon. Remember you need a 32 bit PC, which looks like Windows XP was the last operating system that was totally 32 bit, it sounds like it was an option on some later Windows OS but those later ones may also be 64 bit.
The software that my locksmith used was old also and did not list the 2016 Tacoma (he first tried 2015 Taco but of course this key wasn't an option so it wouldn't work). The smart key ECU is the same for the 2014 or 2015 Lexus IS250 and the same for the 2015 Highlander, so if the software is too old for the 2016 Taco, just select that you are programming one of those vehicles. My locksmith selected 2015 Lexus IS250 and it worked perfectly.

Can someone post a link to the part? I can't find it on partznet or anywhere else.

May have been my fault I had a few typos in my first post, one without the correct number I just edited that.
Next to your name it says you have an SR5 though, just want to make sure you know this will only work with TRDs and Limited, you need to have the Smart Key System with Push Button Start.

Thanks for looking out, I'm definitely going to do this in the near future. I work at Toyota and they will only charge me $50 to program it whenever I order the part.

That is a good question I hadn't thought much about. I assumed it was the same as the fob we already have.
The battery in our fobs is a CR2032, a 3Volt battery with 220mAh capacity.
The battery in the wallet card is a CR2412 with just a 100mAh capacity.
It seems like the card battery wouldn't last as long, but the card does not have buttons(which have to work from much farther away) or an LED like the fob has, so may not need as much power.
Lexus says the se thing for battery life for its Fobs and Cards; 1-2 year battery life. Our Tacoma owners manual also says 1-2 year battery life for the fob.
If you are worried about the battery, you should plan on ordering the emergency key that fits in the card, and have some peace of mind knowing you can get in your truck with a dead battery, and the truck will start if you push the start button using the card or fob even with a dead battery.
Also our trucks (and the Lexus) will warn us on our multifunction screen when our battery is getting low, before the battery dies, and you then know it is time to replace. I am not worried about it, I do have the emergency key in order though, but figure if I have to replace the battery a little more often it is still worth it for me.

So you won't have a manual key to unlock the truck when the remote battery unsuspectingly dies or the key gets bent and damaged in the wallet. I don't see the point of this because you still have to carry house keys.

I park in my garage and use the garage door to the house no keys needed for 90% of my daily life. I would keep a set of keys in the truck. But I HATE carrying keys.

This would be a HUGE value to me. HUGE.

Read the first post. He enters his house through his garage, so no need for house keys. Just like me I haven't has house keys for years. Before you say it, my garage door has a battery back up in case the power goes out. Now if you don't have a garage or its not attached thats another story, but then I would just get a PIN style lock on my front door. Just to not cary keys. My skinny jeans can't take it.

Still doesn't answer when the card battery dies and you dont have the attached key in the fob to unlock the truck. You dont lock your house door from the garage? So a scanner could pick up your closing signal and open up you garage door and walk right into your house.

Some of us live in places that we are more likely to win the lottery than have someone steal out garage door code signal and break into our house.
