Lexus Credit Card Key Working in Tacoma

I just ordered a used one off Ebay and a couple of blanks to practice. Couldn't find anyone around here to cut them either.

 

Anyone have a spare token for sale?

 

thinking of trying this. To put it in simple terms, get the Lexus key fob and use some software to program it? (pretty sure my friend has it but not texting him at 1230 at night lol) then get the emergency key cut. Thats it?

What happens if the battery dies in the fob? Can I just touch it to the press to start button like the normal factory tacoma fob?

wonder if this will work with my 2012 Camry ill have to research more

 

First questions, basically that is it. To program yourself you will need Techstream and a cable to connect your laptop to your truck. (a brand new key or virginized key is easier to do than a used key).

It will start truck with dead battery if held to the start button like normal. Need emergency key for the door.

It appears the key fobs can only be associated with one vehicle at a time. Same key wont simultaneously do 2 different vehicles. (if you are asking if a similar mod can be done to the Camry with its own key card, i have no idea).

What about remote starting? How would that work

 

since there is no physical buttons on the credit card key, you would need to get the cellular module for the remote start and use your phone.

 

When I first setup this smart key on my 2018 3rd gen Tacoma, I had no problems. Just walk up to the truck, grab the handle and voila, the doors unlock. Not so true in the last few days. I now have to take the smart key out and put it next to the door handle to get it to unlock the doors.

I have put 4 different batteries into it. The original CR2412, a 2 pack of Panasonic CR2412 that I got from Amazon and a CR2016 that someone here said works also. I continue to have the same problem. I cannot unlock the truck with the fob in my wallet, in my pocket.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? Victory (OP)?

Edit: I may have figured it out myself. Since I am attempting to go keyless, I got one of these wallets to really minimize what I carry in my back pocket. I first just put the smart key in my pocket and the doors locked/unlocked as they should. Then I put the smart key in my old wallet and, again, the doors locked/unlocked as they should. I guess I'll have to go back to my old wallet. When I bought the minimal wallet, it never mentioned it had any RFID as others did so I figured it didn't. Maybe it does. Well, at least it's working now.

Well the little cheap key cutter from eBay did the trick. I cut mine and cut the blank from my wife's highlander spare key. Now I no longer fear that the wallet key will die when I am out and about.

 

My key card cracked the other day and quit working. I replaced the battery and it worked for a day. So I'm gonna try another battery and hope for the best, but I suspect my card is toast. Going back to the fob has been disappointing.

 

I used to put my Lexus credit card key in my wallet before and now I moved it over to a phone case that hold credit cards so it doesn't make my wallet thick and fat.

 

Does anyone know where/who/Home Depot will cut the blank keys?

 

My Home Depot was not able to do this style key when I checked in 2016 but that may have changed in 3.5 years. They also weren’t willing to cut personal keys but I think you could probably talk an employee into it if they have the correct machines now.
