    I will try to explain in more normal words.

    The DIR harness (which turns off license plate lights while in reverse) employs a T harness (aka packet sniffer aka man in the middle aka nosey neighbor) to trigger a relay to break the lights aimed at the license plate (and tangentially affecting the camera).

    Meanwhile the total tails harness remaps turn and reverse to a switchback bulb.

    Therefore, from the oem harness off the truck you connect the DIR harness first (upstream) then the total tails harness after (downstream). The DIR harness is a pass through and doesn’t affect anything about the reverse signal, it just places a very small extra load on it to trigger the relay.

    Ran a bunch of errands last night after the sun went down, and realized just how convenient this is. I was used to turning my lights off when I put the truck in reverse just so I could see. I have an aftermarket rear bumper and the license plate lights (aftermarket LED) point right up at the camera.

    I would buy this right now if it wasn’t because I already have a rear bumper so this is no longer an issue, I can’t believe I hadn’t seen this, I also can’t believe it makes such a huge difference, I always knew the Tacoma’s camera/display was bad but this cuts the shittiness in half, or makes the cam twice as good. Either way Great mod.

    i installed it with the total tail lights stage 1
    it’s pretty easy just plug this in directly to the oem harness prior to installing the stage 1 kit . Finally no more glare at night when using the backup cam . Money well spent imo.
