License plate light Disable while In Reverse (DIR)

Huh, hold off? I just took delivery today, darn. Product feels great, I'm pushing away from desk now heading to garage for the installation!!

I'm still working on the sugar plan, the gears are moving but it's not ready for an announcement quite yet. It also won't be earthshattering or anything so no massive reason to wait, I just don't want people getting cranky about missing out by a few days.

I'm hoping to have it in place by mid April.

 

OK, sugar plan is set and up on the storefront. For $5 more you get a pair of DD HP3's in 5000k to have nice clean pure white light on your plate making life easy for the 5-0. Until you pop it in reverse and then, bam, you're invisible.

I ordered both the harness and LED bulbs and received them quickly. Install was very easy. I used the Chloe video from YouTube as a guide. Thanks for a great product. Keep up the great ideas.

One somewhat related annoyance I have is water droplets hanging on the lens.
I don’t have to means to test, but I wonder if 3D printing a little visor will prevent a water droplet from sticking to the lens.

Yes. I am near the end of a 1000 mile move and boxes should arrive today. I reopened the store yesterday.

I see that as well. Square can be quite frustrating sometimes. I won’t have time to work on it today but I will try to do something about it.

Just ordered the DIR kit + the Aux option. I didn’t quite understand…is the available option content an either/or situation, or does the Aux option come with the DE LED’s as well?

I don’t have a variant for aux w plate bulbs but I can add them. The aux output is build to order.

@caribe makaira would you please remind me what the black connector on our third gens is for? Was it parking assist (separate from BSM?)

 

I like the idea of the DIR, and I have one, but I find with the crappy poor contrast OEM backup cam, it hinders my ability to see. That is not a slight to the DIR, but the camera. At least, when I get up close to a wall or my garage door. The lack of plate lights makes it impossible to see where the bumper stops. Then, the backup lights reflect off the garage door or wall or whatever and blinds the camera, making it worse. Not a fault of DIR, but something I notice. The fault is the camera that simply can’t handle these situations.

I removed the DIR for now but am keeping it - I’m working with a local audio shop who is going to work up an attempt to fab a bracket that can mount a Kenwood CMOS740 HD backup cam in the factory spot. I had that camera in a previous truck and it was fantastic, and the DIR would shine (or not shine??) in that application because that camera has great night vision and doesn’t need plate lights to illuminate the edge of the bumper. So it would simply stop the glare while still giving good visibility (and better backup lights would further help). Should be awesome.

I will say, outside of backing up to vertical surfaces, the DIR was great. That’s why I kept it because I’m sure I’ll use it again later. Unfortunately for all my backing up my driveway I do, I had to undo it for now.

 

I have an aftermarket camera in the shape of the OEM one. Haven’t tried it out yet. You want me to send to you to play with? I think it’d mount clean.

 

I’d be interested in trying that. Any link to it? Would be awesome if there was a known simple upgraded camera that responds better to rear lighting.

 

I think it was listed as 12v. I think I got it on eBay. Let me hunt for a link.
