License plate light Disable while In Reverse (DIR)

The DIR w AUX has a thicker "trunk" if you will, as it's 3 wires instead of 2. Also uses 14 gauge milspec instead of 18 gauge txl so it is more expensive (I have to order more red, good reminder) intended to support the increase in current for aux reverse as compared to plate light bulbs.

It might be "nice" if I could somehow offer an add on module to a base DIR to convert it but I can't figure out a way to do that.

It comes with a cap so you can keep it waterproof when not in use.

 

I'm gonna go ahead and order the aux version right now. Reckon I can get it to PA within a week or two? I hate working on my truck in the snow lol

You won’t be disappointed. I use this with the Aux powering a MESO HitchPod/BD S1 light, and it works fantastically. This is so good, I think it should be an OEM feature.

 

inhabe the same setup but with the Diode Dynamics pod. I agree, it’s a phenomenal setup. I’m in rural area, when it’s dark, it’s DARK. This mod is worth its weight in gold

 

Couldn’t find this detailed. I’m running an anytime backup camera front camera with OEM backup camera.

when I switch to the backup camera even while moving forward (so not in reverse), will the license plate lights turn off? I kind of want them to since contrast will be set for if they’re off. Anyone know if there’s an easy way to adjust this or am I asking for too much?

 

No, the relay trigger is off the reverse bulb, when reverse bulbs are on, plate lights (if on) will be disconnected.

Back in the day I'd just slap it in reverse if I cared but I have a germes kit so I can see the difference and see what it's like with them on.

My new bumper is so low budget that it didn't come with plate light cutouts, seems like perfect irony to me.

In order to get that functionality you'd need to feed the relay from the trigger input to the head unit which would then kill plate lights with the front camera (perhaps sub-optimal) or do some extra fancy logic with multiple relays to "figure things out" but it's really a ton of cost and headache, doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

 

you bring up a valid point. Probably easier to relocate to avoid this issue when getting a high clearance rear bumper. Maybe best off skipping the harness for now til I know what I’m doing there

Got mine and finally managed to find time to install it. For anyone looking for a way to prevent your tag lights from saturating your backup camera, this is the answer! Also installed the bed lights while I had the taillights removed. Can't wait to get the Nilight hitch lights installed. They will be plug and play with the accessory connection provided with this harness!

Thanks to @daveeasa and FBC Solutions! As an electrical engineer and former Navy trained advanced electronics tech with quals in miniature and micro-miniature circuits repair, I can vouch that this is a quality made harness.

 

I know you asked this a while ago but you didnt get many responses so I figured why not answer. I ordered the DD HP3s with my DIR harness and got it installed about a month ago and I think they're fine. They weren't a lot of money so I figured why not order them since I've already made the switch from oem amber colored lights to white LEDs everywhere else on the truck. I don't get anything extra out of them that the OEM ones didn't do, and I'm not even sure I want my license plate to be more legible... but they're in and they work just fine. Would probably do it again just because I have an addiction to tinkering with my truck.

 

Thanks. I've since decided most aren't that into the plate bulbs as a bundled option so I stopped after I sold off the last pair. Figure the few that do can pay a little extra to get them from Hotshot or DD directly.

 

You should bundle your DIR with like a gallon of milk, or some KitKat bars. Pretty sure there's a large overlap in people who buy milk, and people who buy DIR.

 

Hey Dave, tonight I was installing this VLEDS kit and it seems to be incompatible with the DIR harness, which is really unfortunate because it's such a great addon.

The issue experienced is that the reverse light will only go amber, both when hazards/turn blink and when in reverse. Disconnecting the DIR harness did the trick and now the reverse light goes white as expected.

Do you have any thoughts on the possible cause and/or if it can be mitigated to work along with the VLEDS kit?
