Lift and tires

Ok so im new to the Tacoma and my friend says he has a set of BFG 285/70/R17. What does this mean? I know what 33's and 35's are and stuff but i dont know what these letters mean. I know this is really noobish but any help would be great. Im looking also at putting some 33's on my truck with 18' moto metals in black. How much lift would i need?

 

you should go with a 3 inch lift, as that will probably work, and with the 285's....you still may need to trim a bit or remove the mud flaps, but im not exactly sure. use this to figure out the exact difference between the stock tire size, and the ones you wanna go with.

I have no idea what the 285's mean lol. All i know is the term 33's and such

 

a 285 tire is alot wider and bulkier than say a 265.......so you would need a lift and possible trimming to fit 285 tires on your truck.

what size are the stock tires??

 

285 is the width of the tire (in millimeters), 70 is the % of width in the sidewall 17 is the wheel size. This is called Metric Size.

A 285/75 tire is a 33" tire. To fit you will need to trim inner fender wall as well as the mudflaps and a lift.

Edit:

OP: Your stock tires are 265/70/16. With a 3" lift, most people go with a 265/75/16 tire (no trimming needed) or a 285/75/16 (slight trimming needed). The ladder being the most popular option. I personally don't really want to bother with trimming or the higher cost of the 285s, so I will be going with 265/75/16 on stock wheels when I lift in a few months.

 

So how much trimming would you think id need if i went with a 285/70/R17?

 

Not much. Just a little on the plastic and probably remove the mud flaps.

What I would do is mount them and drive normally for a week so that you have some marks of where its rubbing and then you can just trim accordingly.

My 285/75 16's were technically 32.8" tall, and 11.something wide. I did not need to trim any of the plastic since they didn't rub. They did, however, rub the UCA's slightly on lock-to-lock turns. Wheels with different BS can be used to run them without rubbing the UCA's, but then you need to trim the body mount because that becomes the new rub point. I'm cheap and lazy so I stayed with stock wheels and let it rub the paint off the UCAs. My new set of tires (waiting to go on as we speak) are 265/75 16's so they're slightly narrower and an inch shorter (31.8" or something like that). So I definitely will not need to trim for those. Cheaper too.

 

I used to have 285/75/16s but even after removing my front mud flaps and trimming a lot i was still rubbing. I'm running with DR coilovers and TC UCAs up front. Is there something you can have done with the alignment to I guess push the front wheels up closer to the front of the truck? I read about people all the time running the 285s with just a little trimming to prevent rubbing and I dont see how they do it. I went down to 265/75s because the rubbing was so bad.
