You are correct. I downloaded a FSM for a 2006 Tacoma with the 1GR-FE engine. Here is the adjustment procedure for the valves and very true, no shims but the lifter cap is replaced with the proper height cap.

Hi, I'm reviving this thread as I'm inquiring about the same noise in my truck? Do you still have the truck? Does it still make the noise? Did you check if you are burning any oil?
