My main question is, are these legal to use on the road? As day light savings time has begun, I have thought about putting on the 30 inch single row light bar from rough country i've had. Bought it for my Honda 500 and just never put it on. I looked at the mounts from RC but there is a great deal of cutting the lower grille. Don't think I want to do that, will it be a better idea to mount it behind the top of the grille?

In my state they are considered off road lights and a citation will be issued if used on public roads. The regulation here reads that they are supposed to be covered while on public roads too but I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with that unless they were acting like a total mental midget.

    Your mileage may vary.

If you're in New Orleans, in Louisiana it isn't. Technically, you're supposed to have a cover over it while on the road, but they don't really enforce that. Why do you need a light bar while on the road?

Short answer, yes they are considered off road lights and illegal on road. That said, my state you're allowed to have 4 total from facing lights on while driving

It's not really yours til you hack it up :sawzall:

Here's my 30 and bar behind the grille for inspiration..

Yep, technically illegal in just about every state. Like GT mentioned, legally they are suppose to be covered if you have them mounted on the truck. Back in the 80's and early 90's, you'd get busted for for having your big ole KC lites mounted up and driving around without the smiley face covers, WITHOUT being turned on.
I kinda wish they would enforce the law, many assholes only have lightbars to flash oncoming traffic. Somewhere in their fucked up head, they think it's funny?
If you need that much light driving down the road, maybe you shouldn't be driving at night or you shouldn't have your headlights aimed so high?

Diode Dynamics has SAE compliant fog light bars, they would probably be legal to use on the road.

That said, fog lights do not help with your long range night vision, and instead hamper it.

I think from what others have said here, its technically illegal to run them without a cover. Since cops up where I live don't have shit to do, they actually pulled over my buddy the other day for no other reason except to give him a ticket for an uncovered light bar. It rarely happens and many just drive without covers. Because of this though, my 50 inch is now covered when Im not on the trail.

Receiving a ticket for an uncovered light bar seems a little extreme, but I'd rather than than how it is around here. There is an asshole in my neighborhood that I see driving around all the time in town with a roof mounted, grill mounted, 2x bumper, 2x windshield led bars/pods turned ON .... and his headlights turned OFF. Wish I had a solid steel bumper to just smash into him and destroy his dumb fucking lights. Total fucking toolbag. Even worse, he drives a Tacoma (2nd gen) :(

I don't know how that dude hasn't gotten pulled yet. I would think just firing up that many lights would attract a lot of attention, then not even having your headlights on is like WTF!

I have seen a jacked up ford with a massive light bar lit up on the freeway in daylight several times. You can see him in the rear view mirror coming from a long way back even in daylight.
