I just bought a 2002 4cyl 4wd tacoma and driving it home i found that the Automatic floor shift lever does not illuminate at all. I need to get this fixed but thought i would see if anyone knew what size bulb it takes or maybe if it is a common problem going out and how to fix it. I will be doing a lot of work to this truck in the coming weeks but it seems like it's in overall good shape with not much if any rust.

I have a 2nd but this exact same thing happened with my truck. However, it didn’t go out completely and would light up intermittently. I was young and dumb when this happened, and stupidly paid the dealer over a hundred bucks to fix it.

It's a small bulb. 74 something. Likely that it's just burned out. I replaced mine when I got my truck with 165k and 11 years old.

My truck only lasted to like five years and maybe 53K miles. I honestly don't remember if it was the light or the wiring. Also, I live in Pennsylvania, which has obnoxiously strict safety inspection rules. Luckily, my truck has a PRNDL light on the gauge cluster, but vehicles that do not have the secondary PRNDL will fail inspection if the light burns out.

ok thanks i was wondering if it was some kind of wiring problem or just a bulb i haven't got a chance to check yet but it sounds like a common problem hopefully it's just a bulb.

Just search for colored dash lights or something like that. Lot of people put in different colored LED dash lights.

Was the factory dash red though? If i buy white lights to put in it will it just light up red from the way the cluster is made? If it was red from the factory i will leave it red but if some ricer got a hold of this thing and pimped his ride i would rather change it back to white.

Red, or amber? Mine is more of an amber/orange color, which is factory.

It looks red to me but i dont feel like tearing the dash apart to see if Paul Walker has been inside if it before me. If the bulbs are white and the gauges are red/orange i cant change it anyways.

Lemme guess...? You live in Norfolk/Virginia Beach or a part of Virginia other than the DC Metro area?

Fairfax County, and the independent cities of Arlington and Manassas both require emissions testing every two years. I lived there from 2002 to 2005. No other part of Virginia requires emissions.

Also, in about 2001, my uncle had to get rid of his 1985 Mazda GLC that he absolutely loved because it would no longer pass emissions. He bought the car new in Georgia I believe, and also had it in Maryland and Virginia. He lived in Fairfax County, where emissions testing is required, and donated the car to Purple Heart. The car still ran and drove great, the A/C still blew cold, and there was nothing wrong with it other than it produced more than the acceptable amount of emissions.
