    one of my friends has a cheaper version of that kind of shifter in his car. the thing is so cool, all you have to do is select the shift patern you have and bam, tells you exactly what gear you're in.

    :cough: rice. Honestly that's pretty useless. Especially as your hand will be covering it during actual shifting... and you'd be tempted to look at it while driving. Eyes should be on the road and at most shifting to the tach... not down to the gearshift.

    On a side note, the Subaru Legacy GT (6spd manual) has an indicator in the high center of the cluster to show what gear you're in akin to an automatic transmission (and like this shift knob). It's kinda cool in a way but again useless. However at least this is by the tach and in a better position to see.

    Still, no matter what you should learn your car, what RPM range at speeds the gears run in, and drive it proper. You need to know the rpm's to speed anyway for proper down shifting with minimal drivetrain shock (and for those saying coast to a stop in neutral... what about twisties and turns you don't stop at? :D).
