Since no one has figured out a way to do the anytime locker mod on a 3rd gen, I was wondering if I could replace the factory locker with an arb or an after market elocker? I really liked being able to use the locker on my 2nd gen without being in 4wd.

I thought TRD Offroads had a 8" diff with a locker

While other trims had 8.4" diff.

And I thought that ARB lockers only fit with 8.4" diffs. So you might need to swap axles?

I believe 3rd Gens OR now have a larger rear and have howling issues.

Why not just rewire the stock E locker to a momentary switch that lets you lock it whenever you want?

OR and any manual have 8.75 rear I believe. And ARB have made lockers that fit

It's a new axle, there should be stuff coming out soon hopefully. Only thing out right now for the OR and manual trans trucks is the ARB at about $900.

from my experience with a detroit locker in my uncle's sierra...fucking scary in the snow.
rather have something more controllable like the ARB.
Might just be my driving style or something but for off road always found something selectable/controllable to be much better. I do know guys with jeeps that run Posi and Detroit but was not a fan driving it off road.
On the track on the other hand...have seen many run them drag racing, very impressive stuff.

Any idea how to do this, it's a good idea, but I'm not an electrical genius.

I have an idea but I'd have to find the wiring diagram and piece it together. I'm sure it works similar to the front ADD.

True of 2nd gens at least. But ARB makes air lockers for both diffs. Different part numbers. Seen at least one TW member selling one because he'd ordered the wrong one and couldn't send back for some reason.

$900 plus install if you're not mechanically adventurous/inclined.

    ARB makes good stuff though.

Honestly, I'm probably not going to spend any time doing this. If you can find the wiring diagram I'll take a look and see if I can make a wiring scheme. There are about 11736 people on here that could do it. Might be best to find the diagram and post it for everyone. It would probably get done faster.

Common misconception. Positrac and TruTrac are not lockers they are limited slip diffs. TruTrac being torque biased instead of speed biased. Works great with Tacomas tracking control.

This is not a new axle. It is simply new to the North American market. The locker that is used in them is made by an Eaton subsidiary for Toyota.

Unless your uncle swapped in a Detroit locker his Sierra he has what is known as a "Gov lock" or "Gov bomb" which is the Eaton G80 centrifugal locker. They are weak, dangerous and tend to fail at the least opportune time. IMG_2901.jpg

The reason they are called a "Gov bomb"

Eaton Detroit lockers are as stout as they come but when they unload the tension on the lock plates and unlock in a turn it can get tricky/spooky. Not to mention that they are noisy.

@RedBeard1 It not being a new axle would make since why ARB had a locker already available for it. Hopefully we'll see a Detroit or grizzly locker available soon.

Eaton and Yukon probably do already but the US vendors haven't realized it yet. Pretty sure both have them available in areas like the Australian market but they won't have as strong of a following there as ARB.
