Hi, So I read posts saying that after market locking gas caps trigger the "check engine " light. I bought the recommended gas cap but only use it when I am leaving my truck in a potentially schetchy situation. Not for daily driving. So far so good I think.

I’ve had a (real) Stant 10504 for about 6 months now and drive everyday with no problems (unlike the Duralast cap that I got first and returned shortly after). There are a lot of caps out there that are sold as Stant brand, especially on Amazon and Ebay, but they aren’t and they will throw a check engine light. The real Stants work well. I believe some are running Car Quest 10504s (that appear to be re-branded Stants) that seem to work also, but if you want to be 100% sure, buy a 10504 in a Stant box.

It’s too bad the fuel door doesn’t lock on new trucks. I have my 2013 Mazda that has a locking fuel door that I wish my truck had but not a big deal. Fortunately I don’t have to worry about people tampering with my gas but I’d like the piece of mind.

I read into this thread but I’m too lazy to rig this up.

If having your gas siphoned is your concern I believe I read in this forum that it can't happen, as some
tapering or filtering would prevent any kind of device from actually reaching down that far. Pouring sugar
or other substance into the tank is another story.

As Vito says: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer LOL ...

Thanks for the replies. I did purchase a Stant 10504. I have just been using it intermittently when parking in sketchy area. Maybe I will just leave it in all of the time and see how it goes in regards to the "check engine" light.

Gas siphoning is not my concern. Some punk putting something into my tank is my concern.

Do you really sit around worring about some punk randomly going up and down the street pouring sugar in gas tanks? If so, that's some serious paranoia you are dealing with brother! Now if you are a total asshole that has pissed off half the neighborhood then I guess I get your concern.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I bought the Stant (on Amazon) and got a day or so with it and it threw the code. Maybe I got a counterfeit, IDK. No matter what I did, it would bust me with a code so I sent it back. I'd like to try again so I'll have to try a different dealer, I guess.

I had got the Stant 10504 off eBay from a reputable seller with good feedback and the box and product looked authentic. I however had no luck with it. It would always put up the check gas cap warning for me and aslo some EVAP codes no matter how many clicks I tried to tighten the cap. I went back to the stock cap and not had any issues. Seller must not have been that reputable, that is a knock off Stant. Take a look at the thread link in post #4.

Doesn’t look like there’s an embossed “S” on the cap like there’s supposed to be.

Do you not lock up your house then either? With the right tools that can be broken into in a matter of seconds as well.

I see in that thread this posts pictures look like mine. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...p-to-avoid-engine-light.747326/#post-26611150
So mine is counterfeit. I'm convinced now.

In this post there is an "S" on the handle part and the printing is white where mine is black...
I hate getting ripped off by counterfeit products
