Personally I hate how trucks don't have a release in the cab for the gas tank cover. Leaves it available for anyone to walk by and mess with it. I've tried searching for covers and only find cheap gas caps with a key that seem unreliable. Anyone ever find a reliable locking gas cover before?

The thief is going to drill a hole through the bottom of the plastic fuel tank to get your fuel.

Well besides that and not just to siphon/steal gas. It's way more convenient in the middle of the night for someone to open the cap and dump contaminates in. If someone's going to drill your tank for fuel then they must've really had something out for you

They drill the tank to steal the gas. It's easier, quicker, and more concealed.

It’s much more likely for a random shithead to drill a tank to get the gas, especially when prices are high
They don’t give a shit that someone they don’t know has to buy a new tank, they got $30 worth of gas for free

I highly doubt a random would pour something in your tank

Welcome! To answer your question there’s one that works well and is recommend here. I believe it’s stant? But there are counterfeit of the brand that will throw codes.
I’ll see if I can find one of the threads and edit it into this comment, but for future reference; the easiest way to search the wealth of information here is to use google and add site:www.tacomaworld.com after what you’re looking for.

edit: here’s a thread that seems promising

So you fear someone might randomly come along and pour sugar in your gas tank but if they drill your gas tank from below to steal your gas it was a targeted hit? Give me break!

Check out post #61. I have the Stant on the left side of the pictures. No CEL light in 9 years.

I also have the Stant. I read about the problems with counterfeits, so I bought one locally at Autozone to make it easier to return if there were issues. No CEL issues so far after a little over two years.

Yes, thieves can drill your gas tank, but I figure it's easier to move to an easier target? Realistically, probably depends on where you live and park.

Actually, thieves will drill your gas tank if they are after some free gasoline. Nobody siphons gas anymore. Your locking gas cap does one thing and one thing only; it makes you feel better.

I used to work at a high school before retiring. I wasn’t too worried about gas being stolen. My high school had a Auto shop, Metal shop and Wood shop classes so students knew how to used a drill.

I wanted to prevent funny stuff from being put in my tank. One day I found chewing gum stuck to my cab. Another day I found empty pizza boxes and napkins in my open bed. Funny thing is I park two car lengths away from a garbage can.

I got my locking Stant gas cap because kids will be kids.

I had a locking cap once. The thieves tried drilling it to open the thing and couldn’t so they resorted to drilling the tank.

Now that we have plastic tanks they can puncture it without a drill, so that will be the achilles heel. There’s a much easier way to get gas than either of those methods but I won’t post it here.
