I forgot to mention that the actuator is held in place by a nut behind the fuel door. Since you'll need to unscrew the nut to remove the actuator body and there is no way to get access to that nut unless you cut a hole in the gas cubby area. This would be a certain nightmare without the bedside cubby access to do...hence the reason I went with the OEM pinch clip. I will always be able to open the door even with the actuator failure...

Yes... I have a buddy that had the actuator bolt separate from the bracket that holds the bolt mechanism. He was lucky enough to have the bedside cubby that allowed access to the fuel area. He had to drill a hole through the back to get to the nut that retains the actuator to remove it and then was able to pop the fuel door open. This happened one day when he was at the gas station with only a little less than 1/4 tank and found out the door wouldn't open. You can't pry the door open with the actuator bolt in place without damaging your fuel door. He managed to get the nut off at home and repair the actuator. The actuator consists of 2 primary parts: the bracket plate and the bolt/electronics. There is a layer of adhesive holding the 2 together which separated causing the actuator to not release the pin from the fuel door.

So...that's what happened in his case. The electrical on the actuator may also fail, but you never know as it's a gamble. That's exactly why I decided to use the pinch clip to keep the door closed over the actuator pin vice the aluminum piece that screws on the fuel door and keeps it locked and secured. I just prefer the function over the form in this case and it's reassurance knowing that if it ever fails while I happen to be out and about...I can always open the fuel door with my hands..

I love the mod though! Just want to play it safe...:)

I don't follow you when you say you still use the OEM pinch clip with the actuator? Can you please post a picture. I have a 2014 regular cab...so if I do this mod, I can't remove the fender liner to unscrew the solenoid? THe solenoid is installed from the exterior gas door area? So how does the pinch clip help you... appreciate some clarification. Thanks!

Here's the stock clip and you can see the nut screwed on the actuator pin.

Yes...you can go under the fender liner and try to remove the solenoid, but the threaded nut resides within the gas door compartment holding the actuator. Too much PITA if needed to get it off...imo

Thank you for the picture...cleared up the confusion. The thing I am curious if you use the stock clip...what's the purpose of this mod for you then? It just seems to defeat the purpose of adding the solenoid. I say it respectfully out of curiosity and to understand. I see your point about if the solenoid craps out.. you'd be in trouble.

So the Mod has a 2 fold purpose.
    1. Secure gas (locking door--prevent gas theft)
    2. Pops open at push of the button for cool factor much like a Lexus has...:D

I really don't have to worry where I live about gas theft...so option one is not a factor. I just thought it would be fun to do the mod and pressing a button and watching the spring loaded door pop open for visual effect...lol Let's face it...there's practicality in things and fun in things...that's why we mod. Your choice really...:)

I wonder if this would work on a 2016 T4R?

Scroll up to post #46 and if you look at the gas cap cover door observe the little clip that is wedged in the door at the hinge point. My buddy @kh7nm had this clip from another gas cap door (can't recall the model), but he might be able to fill you in on where to get it. The wider the clip, the more force it will pop-open...

Post #75 on this thread has great pics of the whole kit...

Yes I see the pictures but he doesn’t mention where the actuator is from.
