Hey everyone! I am a new Tacoma owner! Just bought myself a 2006 TRD last week. It has an ARE cap on top that locks but I'd also like to get a manual locking tailgate latch.

    re: Pop and Lock's PAL5500 vs PAL5400

One of these comes with two little keys, the other comes with Bolt "technology" to allow me to code to my ignition key. I don't mind having an extra key, so my only question is: is having it coded to my ignition key also meant to be more secure or harder to break in to? Are there any other real pros to the BOLT coded latch other than not having an extra key?

I've heard such mixed things about pop and lock but it's also supposed to be the best out there

You're correct the only difference is an extra key you need to carry or not. It doesn't make one any more secure than the other as it's still the same mechanisms inside the tailgate that physically lock the tailgate.

I went with the PL8540. I can use my regular truck key to unlock it but I don't need to since this model works with the car's key fob remote as well. I've had mine installed since 2016 with no issues. It's a bit sun faded but nothing super noticable, it's still black.

I had 2 manual pop and locks on my ‘03 and had to remove them both when they corroded so badly they would no longer lock or unlock. I am in the salt belt in NJ however so YMMV.
