That makes sense. I remember lining it up when I put my spare back up.

Was doing some wiring for tailgate actuator and found myself looking at the same exact thing. Hit the trail the very next day (Thursday) and guess what? Got a rock slice in my brand now Falken Wildpeaks. Safe to say im looking for a new spare tire. Are they 15" steelies? or are they the same as the other 4?

My lock came out for the Oem one but pushed it back in and since I relocated my chain further back to fit a 285 the cone can no longer fall out as it's against a portion of the cross member

I just got my 16 a couple of weeks ago and now I'm sorry curious about whether it has any kind of spare tire security from the previous owner.

On the topic of how they could sell one spare tire, I would bet that they wait until they steal four or five tires and then sell them as a full set.

Is the spare a Steelie or alloy?

A cop once told me that anyone driving around with a gas powered cutoff saw in their trunk was probably up to no good, and unfortunately, those cheap little hand held lithium battery tools like drills and cutoff saws sold by HF have fulfilled the dreams of many crooks, too. No lock, chain or cable is safe anymore. I put a cable lock around my spare and a master lock on the lowering chain, but a buddy of mine also has a good idea: he made a paint mask of his license plate number and sprayed it on the back of his tires, wheels and spare!

I use a short stainless steel chain and a brass padlock packed with grease. Just trying to keep everyone honest.

Honestly I needed to get a full size spare anyways, gonna try to fit a 285 toyo rt under it and lock it up atleast a few ways. So is the consensus that they didn’t cut a chunk off then/my piece isn’t damaged? Can someone post a pic of their underside with the spare off? I’m amost 100% it was thieves because there are a bunch of other tacos in the neighborhood and the few that I have seen since have them missing with their chains semi cranked up.

I also had my rear spare stolen around the same time as your original post... I live in the Whittier area in Denver... I wonder if we got hit by the same "Criminal masterminds". I've been lazy about replacing the spare, but I need to get on it.

Dude, apparently a few dealerships around here got hit too and had like 80 missing from every taco on their lots (or so I heard from a source on FB). I am planning on getting another spare to match my 33” toyo/black rhino combo and I will be installing the oem lock as well as a corded lock with a marine/rust free lock and probably a chain on there too. Lol. I have also been thinking of trying to steakout the spot once I install it/I have been looking into outdoor security cameras. I have checked every taco I’ve seen around denver lately and they are ALL gone- the rare few I see that still have them I write a note saying to get a lock on their windshield. Are they really that easy to get off stock?

A regular bike lock around the frame should be fine. Or for my secure, use a heavy duty cable with a waterproof lock

Maybe it's someone with a towing business lol. That's fucked up though, when I was getting my truck the salesman was saying they had someone come and steal all the cats off the tacomas a couple months before I got my truck. He said they rolled under each truck down the line and cut the cats off with a sawzall. Then he said a few months before that someone stole all of the highlander (i think?) spares. He said it was bc they were the only model that came with the same rims for the spares. And the person hit all 20 highlanders so he got 5 sets of rims

Posted this in local thread, thought I would here. Maybe some bed-width 2-inch aluminum angle dropped along the back edge to cover the lift opening? Open gate, drop in, close and lock gate. Easier than crawling around underneath to undo bike lock. Just a thought, haven't taken a hard look at it.

What part of Denver are you in? I got off of work today and noticed my spare was also stolen off of my Tacoma and the theif also cranked it back up. My question is, who in the hell wants to steal spare tires in Denver. They don’t really have much of a resale value. Now I’m going to have to see if my bracket is also damaged. Seriously starting to hate this city.
