Question for ya' - when you guys did the shackle flip kits did you remove that entire "x" brace that holds the OE spare ? I have noticed a lot of the LT guys have cut that puppy out...but they plate their frames too. I had an idea for that space of I can kill it...but concerned about the amount of support it actually provides etc...

I actually picked up a new one I've never tried before today. I'm really liking it so I might have to bring some for us to try around the campfire.

Those guys that weld in the frame plates are building custom cross members. That cross member is vital to keeping the truck from flexing like crazy especially with all the weight of bumpers and stuff we add. One of the locals here was having an issue with frame twist when he opened up his swingout. He added an additional cross member further back from the X and joker is rock solid. I have been thinking of adding on to mine lately.

Sorry I didn't really answer the question directly... do not remove it unless you intend to build something stronger to put in its place. Again it is a vital portion of the frame back there!

Oh yeah, I've got that flex when the spare gate is open too...35" spare and 2 jerry cans and it looks like my bed is going to peel open. I even made a support bar for when my gate is going to be open for a while. I just have this reoccurring fantasy of adding about 20 gals of storage thru the floor of the bed or a secondary fuel cell in that space while keeping it tucked up high. I take long trips down to baja chasing surf and a few of the spots we go to are 18+ hrs down and one of the spots is a no go Or should I say - a one way trip without two jerry cans of gas. Hmmmm might have to visit the fab shop and look at options...I have a tax return to piss away !
