while taking apart my front end tonight, i came to the decision that putting the factory bumper back on will be a waste of my time. so i will be doing a tube bumper, keeping in mind the truck will never be a race truck and probably spend more time on trails and in the mountains, where would the main points of contact be on a front bumper need to be?

i was thinking boxed in frame horn extensions, main tube, side tubes to tie the main tube into the side of the frame, and then between the frame rails and then down to the cross member to allow for a skid plate to be bolted on. would that be plenty of contact points or not enough?

No, but you should to get the oil out of it. That is the easiest part of the whole rebuild, might as well pop it apart too.

Depends on how hard you nerf I guess. Mine only has two "contact points" and has held up to retarded amounts of abuse, but my frame is also gusseted plus the full cage...

You litteraly remove the snap rings and the 2 ends slide off., leaving you with a hollow tube.

I threw these in the newly started bed cage thread but figured I would post them in here as well. Here is what we finished up over the weekend.

you don't have to take the resi apart to fill it with oil....it has a hose connecting it the the shock.....
1.have shock in a vice with shaft pointing up,
2.Take end cap of resi(shrader valve side)
3.fill body about 1/2 way with oil
    4. set resi piston to proper depth( doing it this way will force any bubbles out of it)
    5. fill the shock the rest of the way up, about 1-2 inches from top
    6. SLOWLY insert piston/shaft assembly into body far enough to have room for seal head
    7. top off oil if needed the insert seal head assembly and c-clip
