Hey there, I'm on a hunt for a very specific combination of things, and after going to the Toyota dealership, I was told they no longer make Tacomas with all the following features. The salesperson said they made them in the past, or so he thought....

Does anyone know what years (if ever!) the following Tacoma existed:

    4x4
    access cab
    4 cylinder
    and here's the kicker.... automatic!

I drove a stick for years. I want an automatic. I don't plan on doing any serious off-roading, just camping and stuff, but I want a 4x4 because, well, it's a truck! ;)

I've been scouring online but haven't found the exact combination above. I know they make that combo but with a V6 and I really don't need/want a V6 at this point. Of course, if there's no other options, then I guess that's what I'll be getting.

    Thanks so much in advance!

When I was looking for an 01-04, from what I remember, I saw that combination come up once or twice. But maybe they offered that combination here, but not in the US.

    I've never seen a 4 cylinder 4x4 Auto. I know it doesn't help, but I've seen a lot.

You can only get the 4cyl in auto in 2wd. You can get a 4 cyl pre-runner in manual but no 4wd. I wanted a 4 cyl pre-runner auto when I bought mine but not available.

If you really really want that combo badly, You can get a pre-runner, and convert it to 4x4

Used tacos are hard to come by, everyone loves them too much! That is why I ended up getting new. But, apparently that is hard to come by as well.

You try a carsdirect.com and edmunds used car search in your area?

Ack. My friend swore she's seen this combo in the late 90's/early 00's but never owned an auto, only manual.

I can't decide which I'm willing to compromise on-- the auto vs. manual, or the 4 cyl vs 6. Haha. Ugh. What is the real-world MPGs y'all are getting with a v6? Does the v6 really not live that same famous long Toyota 4 cyl life span?

There is an MPG thread around somewhere, try putting MPG into it. I am in the process of testing mine, won't know till I fill up again though. But when I do I will bump that MPG thread with my info.

I am expecting around 20 MPG in my V6... it isn't broken in yet though, so I might get less.

Hmmm. Yeah, I'm wondering if around 2000 they made 'em, which is when my friend swears a dealer tried to sell her one even though she wanted a stick.

I found one online for sale that was a 1997 extended cab, 4 cyl, 4x4 auto. I am now trying to figure out if that was the last year they made this combo?

EDIT: I looked year by year online on MSN Autos. It looks like the last year this particular combination was offered was in 2004. After that there's no option for auto transmission in this combination. Sweet. Now I know the truck at least *exists* so now I get to go find it. Good thing I'm in no rush.
