    VVT-i just kicked in yo!
I'd offer him 2500 if the engine and underneath checks out. Bring a scanner for that engine light.

What makes this less desirable than other Tacomas? Mostly the age?

I'm not sure what you mean. If the "frame has been checked".

The frames on the 95 -04 first gen and then on the 05 -12 rust out
Toyota did a buy back on some and a frame replacement on others.
Not sure if yours is still covered but there is a lot of info on here if you search
Calling toyota corp with vin then can prob give you more info
Im in jersey my first 3 Tacos had rusted frames - rain, snow , salt

Opinion: I'd wait for a v6 to surface. I think the 4 Cyl lacks power.

Beware of anyone saying "cost $60 to fix" and "because of catylitic converter." These people are good at sugarcoating issues. I wouldn't buy something that belonged to anyone that didn't take the time to address these issues before selling their vehicle. Buyer beware. Obviously people are free to do as they like, but unless I had a lot more knowledge than I do now or was feeling really lucky I would stay away.

Does this have a timing belt (chain) that lasts for an extremely long time, or a normal belt?

I'm not too concerned with extra power or 4WD. I wouldn't use it for that. I'm thinking of buying this truck! Any reason I shouldn't do that?

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Timing chain. I'd scan for the codes yourself for the check engine light (CEL). I wouldn't take their word for it. You can ask them what the code is and research it and then get back to them, but for $14 you can't not afford to buy this and bring it with you:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B011...-9713-5ad6-a450-eef88898007e&pf_rd_i=15707381

If there's a check engine light for the catalytic converter that they've been ignoring then their engine won't be running right and they have no way of knowing if it's now throwing any other codes.

I did! Got it for 4,000. It needs some work. Muffler is a bit loud, engine revs at idle occasionally, and it shakes after 65mph.

Other than that, it seems solid.

Does anyone know if this has ABS? I would think so, but want to be sure.

Turn the key to ACC mode and see if there's an ABS light that lights up.

Just look for a wire coming off of the front brakes.
