Can anyone recommend good quality recovery shackles, looking for something for a permanent mount as well as to add to a recovery kit. Durable and lighter weight would be best. After googling it’s so hard to pick out the good with the garbage. Thanks

My dad was an Ironworker and rigged a lot, and I mean a lot of massive loads. When building offshore drilling platforms the shackles were 750 lbs. No, that's not a typo. If CROSBY shackles were good enough for him and the other Ironworkers, they are good enough for me!

Worked iron one summer while I was in college. Those are some bad ass dudes!

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I have a few Columbus McKinnon 6.5 ton shackles. Same size as a standard 4.75 ton shackle. I also have a couple Gator Jaw soft shackles, but they’re rather lighter duty.

Nothing from Amazon or Ebay, or any of those other generic online suppliers that get most of their stuff from factories that have suicide nets. With few exceptions, you really don't know what you're getting.

Buy your critical safety gear from a reputable supplier that specializes in off road gear.

But if you're just looking for #instagram points, just get whatever is cheapest and matches your RTT rack accessories.

I've been using Rhino USA shackles and straps with great results.

    Only Crosby for underground mining.
Down there it's not for looks, but they are red, so you still get the style points

What ever you do stay away from places like Home Depot and Ace Hardware for their $5.00 budget shackles.

There is a recent thread about someone looking for leaf spring U-bolts at Home Depot.

I have left hard shackles in the dust. Large pieces of metal do not add to my safety situation in a recovery.

    Soft shackles for life.

I would not suggest anyone buy cheap recovery gear, as you are using it in dangerous situations to begin with and you want something you can rely on.

I have had 2 bubbarope gator jaws for 4 years now, I always use them with chafe guards on them. Not 1 problem with them yet.

You can use them to attach 2 straps together, with again no danger from flying metal objects.

    https://www.bubbarope.com/gator-jaws-synthetic-shackles

Just used them this weekend. :cookiemonster:

I think you're doing yourself a disservice to not at least carry a couple hard shackles. Would kinda suck to be in a situation where you'd just cut up your soft shackle. Then you got nothing.

The idea that hard shackles are "not safe" is simply wrong. Any gear that is missused is not safe, no matter what it's made of.

Also, I assume you are keeping track of how old each of your soft shackles are, and when to replace them, right? The synthetic breaks down over time, regardless if you ever use it. That's not something the marketing teams usually point out.
