As a long time owner of a Nissan Frontier SE V-6 4 X 4 that is getting old and very tired I've decided to look at the Tacoma.

I've been looking at the 2015 Dual Cab 4 X 4 with a V6 and 5 speed automatic. Now that I've seen the new 2016s are out I'm now conflicted between the 2015 or the 2016. If I buy a 2015 I'm going to be stuck with getting whatever is left on dealers lots and possibly not be able to get what I want, and the 2016 I can order the exact truck I'd want. I'd also like to keep it in the $30 - $35K price range.
The 2015 came with a base 6 cylinder engine (?) and now I see the base engine is a 4 cyl? I'm done with those tiny motors, no matter who makes them. I've not seen a 2016 advertised here where I'm at. They're still pushing the 2015 models.

What would you, more knowledgeable Toyota people, suggest I do? I've been driving, and enjoying my Frontier for almost 20 years now, but I need to get something new and I like the looks of the Tacoma compared to the new Frontiers. Go with the 2015 and take whatever I can get or the new 2016 and order what I want?

Base engine has always been a 4 cylinder. Also, you can't necessarily order exactly what you want. But you can order what you are able to.

I'd get a 2015 if I found one I wanted. If not, 2016 will be around a while.

Get the 2016. The base engine is still a 4 cylinder that you're not interested in. Toyota organized the tacoma by grades now and the higher end grades (trd sport, trd off-road, limited) can only have the v6 which technically makes it the base option. but the 3rd gen, on top of new styling, gets a new more powerful and more fuel efficient v6 engine and a new 6 speed automatic transmission. that's the most important difference between the 2nd and 3rd gen tacoma and given the option, the 3rd gen (2016+) is the smarter buy.

Go look at a double cab short bed (DCSB) 4x4 trd off-road. It is right in your price range.

You just said you wanted to get a Tacoma because you don't like the look of the new Frontier. Why are you asking for technical specs? Buy what looks better.

I bought a 2015 because it's a proven platform. I didn't want to deal with potential problems with the new engine/transmission.

I'm considering doing a two year lease on a '15 (or maybe a runner) to give the '16s a chance to prove themselves. Then I will buy an '18 when it's time. I'm starting to think this way only because I am getting frustrating not being able to find a '16 to even just see in person. Now there are rumors of delays/problems...which maybe BS...but I'm starting to run out of time and am uncomfortable ordering a truck I haven't even see, let alone drove.

With that said, the 3rd gens look awesome and the reviews from people on here seem good.

What do you think the 2016 is built on? a proven platform...it looks the same as the 2nd gen with several minor design changes...
if you meant a proven drivetrain that's one thing...but anyone considering a 15 over a 16 only needs to look in the 2nd Gen forum.
the 2012-2015 has multiple documented issues with the driveline/suspension...
There are plenty of threads where folks are getting great deals on 2015s whereas most are paying full price or only slightly below MSRP for the 16s.
The notion that there is no issues with the NEW 2015s is totally false but I guess at least most of the issues are "known" unlike the 2016s.

Yeah I was talking about the new engine and transmission in the 2016.

Other then shitty must change within a week of purchasing springs, engine tick, and rotting frames - not sure it's still an issue on the 2015? What should I be looking for?

Go drive both and get the one you like best....... More parts for the 15 but the 16 didn't change that much so there will be almost as much available...

Intended use..... For towing and heavy loads I lean towards the 15 with the 4.0 will have more low end torque... and it feels like a truck motor which is good and bad... For a daily driver the 16 with the 3.5 is a more refined daily driver and should get better mileage.... We know the 15 eats gas the 16 should be a little better, early results don't seam any better, but it's still early...

So other than price and smaller engine the 16 should be better in every way... a lot of small refinements.... so even though it looks a lot like the 15, most of it has been upgraded under the skin.....

For off road the 16 with the new electronics is a nice extra....

So drive them and get the one you like, they are both Toyotas, so they will both run a long time....
