No opinion on the rack brands but what is your goal with the rack? You may want to consider bed stiffeners at the same time pending your uses of the rack.

I'd like to mount bulky tools and traction boards on the sides.
I am actually not sure what are bed stiffeners used for? To prevent breaking the bed?

It's to prevent the bed from spreading. As you add weight on the rails the bed will want to "stretch" out. You can see the gap I had after running a canopy for a year.

Wow. Thanks for suggesting the stiffeners. I will consider them. Do you need to drill holes in the bed to install them?

If I was going to get a rack

it would be a shell (you can mount things to)
or a big rack that goes over a shell or soft top
to be able to sleep in the back. There's a few like that.

It appears both of the links above do not do that.

I don't see the point of a small rack that provides less mounting space/surface area
and interferes with any sort of protection such as a soft top or shell.

Yeah, even though it would be nice to sleep in the bed, my truck has a short bed and I just wouldn't fit there anyway, so I don't consider sleeping as an optin.

That Zroadz looks real heavy. So much metal. Says the doors can only handle 30 lbs too. If you want something similar with a lot more versatility, I'd look at an Xtrusion Overland rack with AXS gates. Thats what I run now. So many options with that setup.

Our overland bed rack is low profile with multiple mounting points, powder coated to prevent corrosion, and is made of 80% aluminum which makes it light and durable. Please let us know if you have any questions about it :)

Yes these required 3 holes to be drilled on each side.

Sleeping in the bed of a truck sounds great untill you do it. I did it for a summer and sold the cap afterwards. It was no where near as convenient or water proof as you would think.

    did similar
Found it convenient comfortable and water proof.
5’ box is 6’ diagonally using a wooden platform atop the wheel wells. Had 4” foam.

but, ACSB 6’ would’ve been better. Don’t know if anything else that’s longer besides a custom suspicious heavy pullout extension, or gigantic expensive camper.

don’t really know if it’s worth switching to an ACLB given mod fixes done already a different truck likely won’t have

I'm a DCLB bought it in that configuration specifically to camp in the shell but having to remove everything set up every night defeated the purpose and what I pack won't fit in a platform so I found it useless. Now I have the full broverlander set up after ground tenting it all last year and despised sleeping on rocks.

I guess you had more than me.
Bed was laid out, setup was just hopping in. Stuff in the cab and totes under plywood platform.
Still was not enough room for cargo though and the small size of a Tacoma started being noticeable. Prompted getting a roof rack and cargo boxes.

sold the shell for now but if getting another cap later on probably gonna have a rack for gear on that too.

moved Hi Lift out of bed onto front bumper hoops for more room in back, kept hitting it with my feet

Between camp gear and fishing gear then the cooler it's s pretty substantial load on those week long trips. Not to mention the obsurd amount of dust my box collected

What you really need is a rack that properly distributes the load through the full length of the bed.
