hi all... im looking into getting a 2nd generation tacoma not new im looking to buying used. I love everything about the tacoma, did alot of research on them so i know i want one but the only thing thats holding me back is the frame rust issue i get alot of mixed reviews on the frame... some say the rust is not that bad and some say it is. I also live in jersey right on the shore so i know that its not such a great area for rust issues. If i could get your guys honest answers that would be appreciated so i could make a decision on what truck to get. Im looking at the nissan frontier if anyone has any opinions on that I would like to hear. thanx

The frame rust issues were on the 1st gen tacoma's only due to their boxed frame design. The Gen 2 Tacomas have an open C Channel frame , it is only boxed in the front. They fixed that problem.

Thats false; i live in CT and i commute 400+ miles a week. I Had a 2005 Tacoma and now a 2011 Tacoma. Never had any significant rust on the frame. I wash the frame after every snow and do preventative maintinence such as wire brush/ touch up on the frame. All truck frames will rust up here in the snow belt if you don't take care of them.

Whatever dude, I have never seen a 2nd gen frame rotted out. The Tacoma is #1 for a reason. Any other truck is just second rate. There are also cases of fords, nissans, etc frames rotting out, point is if you wash the frame off regularly and perform preventative maintenance, you will be just fine!!

Rotted out or not, I forsee a recall on the second gen Tacomas. The triangular frame/body mounts behind the front wheel well are rusting on MOST Tacomas I've seen. There are two problems. One, the paint is chipping off, and two, it isn't normal surface rust.

The 80s Pick-ups suffered from body rot and Tacomas have frame rust issues. Those body rot trucks are still running with frames fully intact.

From what I've seen, toyotas rust. But they have to to be fair... God knows the engine won't ever die so something has to go wrong so they can keep selling trucks. Toyota has been great about owning up to it with first gens, and I'm sure they'll take care of second gen owners if the problem arises. Get a taco. U you won't regret it.

I like my truck. The problem isn't what I see. A little flaking on the outside has me much more worried about the inside, where even paint isn't present.

When you look for your truck. Look at ALL the weld seams on the frames.

    YFZ and Moonsky,

What I will say is that by the time it rusts out (if ever - just unsightly), 75% of the people on this board probably will have sold them off by then. If you plan on keeping your Tacoma for 10 years, I may worry. But buy the darn thing if you want one. It's the most reliable truck out there, the only questionable thing is long term dependability.

If history repeats itself, Toyota will back their product, and that is hard to ignore. You take a chance with ANY vehicle. Rust or not, you can bet your Tacoma will start up every morning and that more than offsets the risk.
