Pop it open, scrape off old shit, lay down bead of RTV, tighten it up and be done with it.

No way on a truck with a warranty. Toyota will blame you till the end of time if you monkey with it.
    Out of warranty, absolutely.

Its not monkeying with it, its fixing it and if you used FIPG there would be no way to tell.

Yup; Toyota will do anything to deny repairing anything. They blamed my driverside window motor noise on my Window Visors! Then they blamed my vibrating driveshaft on my 2inch lift and aftermarket tires when the last 64k miles I didn't have the vibes and it just became a recent issue. And now my blower motor is howling and they say its normal operation noises.

The vibrations and blower motor noises are all common issues yet they will deny it all the way.

It's exactly monkeying with it. You go ahead and try and let us know how it goes.

How do you think they would fix the issue? Magic? No, they would take it apart, clean the surface, put down some FIPG, and seal it back up. Not sure why that would be classified as monkeying with it.

OMG... If they do it is not monkeying with it. If they see you have tampered with it, congrats its now your baby. Toyota will say you messed it up, its now not a warranty issue but a repair ticket issue. Quit being dense.

I may have missed this is all of the posts, but there seem to be tacomas with no diff howl and some with the diff howl...is there there any difference in the diff based on where/when the truck was built? Again sorry if this was covered, just curious.
    San Antonio vs Tijuana?

No difference. Luck of the draw. Diffs aren't made at assembly plant anyways.

I could tell they torqued my rear end just by looking at the nuts. I'm sure using the rtv you initially suggested doesn't require a degree in anything from Toyota U. I'm also thinking that using the FPG would show once they cracked the diff and yours looks different from the 9000 other diffs they have had to open. Bottom line is why would anyone with half a brain cell give Toyota a reason to deny them warranty coverage until the warranty option is completely exhausted?

I wasn't thinking the diffs were made there, but for instance, when I worked for Acura/Honda different factories (assembly points) used different suppliers for parts. Even though many were "interchangeable" even used the same part number the manufacture was actually a different company between the parts, we saw more failures with one over the other. CL/TL/Accord window regulators and motors. MDX/Pilot rear diff (although not a conventional diff) there were three suppliers for a while. Integra/Civic Radiators...stuff like that.

As far as I know, Hino is the maker off the OR diffs(maybe sports too, dunno) and my OR does not howl, others do. I do not know if HINO assembles them in multiple plants or just one, but if it was a supplier issue like that, I'd assume Toyota would have nailed it pretty quick.
Like I said, I think its just luck of the draw if you get a noisy one or not.

Thanks for the info. No howling yet for me, either I got luck or it just has not started yet...

Not sure why it would look different. And you would do it so it would be fixed.

Because FPG is not the same as the gasket it is assembled with. Not to even mention I already told you that you can tell the diff has been opened/touched simply by looking at the nuts themselves.

You know what, you are right. Go ahead and fiddle with your truck and then try to claim warranty status for the repair. Let us know how it goes.
Actually nevermind, I see you are a second gen owner. Figures.

But Toyota killed people with Prius and said it was " floormats".
