Could be gear lash related to drivetrain load. Not always silent or responsible for premature wear but could be a characteristic of the mechanical workings.

Not trying to sink your boat but preparing you for counter arguments you can anticipate fighting your case.

I would be so pissed if my brand new truck sounded like crap like that and Toyota wouldn't make it right.

If you know for sure they didn't really look at it then take out almost all the fluid, drive it until it's toast, fill back up and have them have at it. What turds!

Because they won't see all the heat marks and nice clean fluid in an otherwise thrashed diff....

That's good advice too. When you bring it back in make sure you're rocking stock tires so they won't blame you

Shouldn't gear lash be set to not make noise at nominal load, just like 98% of every other brand new vehicle on the road?

I have a 2013, my diff started howling. Took it to the dealer and they replaced it no questions asked. The new diff started howling after 2,000mi and I'm debating weather or not I want to have it replaced again. It's very irritating!

Did they replace the seal? If so they have a procedure to measure the level of gear oil to determine if the diff needs to be replace.

I have had this on my 2016 SR5 and my 2017 TRD Sport.

    My 2017 is fine now.

Minimal tire noise on these Destination MT2's. The BFG 265/75's I put on were quieter than the stock goodyears. Once I went to the bigger tire the diff howl stopped.

Here's the email they sent me

    "
    Good Morning Mr. –

At this point, there is nothing further that Toyota__ can do to aide you in your concerns with your Tacoma. The Factory has inspected your vehicle and have deemed that your vehicle is operating as designed and no repairs are needed. If you are not satisfied with this response you will need to take this up directly with Toyota thru their Customer Experience Center (800-331-4331).

Your vehicle is ready to be picked up and we will need our rental car returned please.

    Thank you,"

Depends on application, efficiency and cost verses failure rate I guess. You would like to think they would prioritize sound engineering practices over cost but if people are buying these things up like crazy, noise might be considered a compromise.

A lot of trucks gears make a "how" or wine.... it's a common complaint from ford chevy yota Nissan you name it.. do you expect a truck to drive and sound like a Camry or the sorts? Toyota has historically been good with standing behind their products and ensuring longevity. Use your truck or sell it. The whining like a girl is getting old

I’d recommend a second opinion from another proven dealer. I wouldn’t mention the previous experience. They might all stick together with a front to protect...

Really? I've owned a 2003 Toyota Tacoma, a 2003 Ranger with over 160k miles on it, a 2011 GMC Sierra Denali, and I've driven HUNDREDS of other trucks of all makes and models from friends, to rentals, etc you name it. NEVER had one that howls like this on the highway.

Like a girl? I've owned a 2002 4 runner, 94 4x4 with the 3VZ and recently a 06 Nissan Xterra. All of them had wayy more mileage than 1,200 miles. Guess what? No rear differential whine. You said " historically" I can assure you thats not the case anymore. If I pay 35K for a brand new truck you're damn right i'm going to " whine"

If you don't like what I post then just leave the thread. All I'm trying to do is help the community by making Toyotas actions fully transparent. Am I upset? Sure.

The end of the day. I find the Tacoma world to be a amazing resource. Had this been 20 years ago, Toyota could have pulled the wool over our eyes.
