I agree. But if Toyota won't do anything, and I think lemon lawing it is unlikely, a few hundred bucks with someplace reputable like ecgs could be worth it to just move on and enjoy the truck. I have enough stress in my life, and a few hundred bucks rather than a long battle would be the lesser of two evils for me. It would piss me off, but if in the ops' shoes that's what I'd do. Op could save his receipt, and if toyota comes out with a tsb fix try to get refunded. Good luck op.

OP, they replaced my first diff because the howl was a "definite problem," then when the 2nd diff started howling within 30 miles, they retracted everything and said "it must be normal."

I was told they disassembled my first diff and determined there was no excess wear or any abnormalities.

I gave it 22k miles, but I was pissed every time I howled my way home to make that monthly payment. Finally just sold it outright to a local dealer.

Good luck, it's a widespread problem and I hope for the sake of so many people you go through with having the diff rebuilt independently and eliminate the howl. I would have done it, but I had other complaints with the truck (mainly the engine), so I threw in the towel.

i find that hard to believe that that many teeth broke up a "driveway" would take some distance to do that kind of carnage or he gunned it hard -- i didnt read the thread but that is my thoughts...

back to exploding diffs, i would know since i blew mine in the middle of a trail and had to finish it to get it on workable ground and towed.

I agree with both these statements. Purely my opinion, but people are known to lie to cover their ass.

mine was from rock crawling, it pop when i climbed out of a wedge. I knew what it was but had to keep going since back tracking wasnt an option i had to finish the trail with it and the help of a winch.

Many reasons for them failing as discussed

diff fluid low and not doing its job
    sudden gain of traction locked
    poor parts
    poor installation
    etc.

if your truck is low milage it would be hard to tell from shavings if you drained it since its a given with the first change, subsequent drains should spell the story to come.

gl with your replacement, i had the cv needle bearing vibe since purchasing the truck, like you i documented it all with visits and they replaced it some thousand miles later when so many complained -- but that was a long time ago

Is there any audio of the noise?

That’s the issue with these threads, we have no way of determining the extent of the issue and people just start jumping in either Pro OP or Pro Toyota based on their previous experiences.

For all we know the howl sound of the previously replaced units could have been far more significant than what you are experiencing. Or, as others have stated, the units replaced were over a year ago and underwent testing on the replaced units and Toyota changed their threshold on warranty replacements.

It isn’t like these are grenading left and right but the dealer and corporate just decided in your case not to replace the parts.

Go to a nice big dirt field and turn on every nanny device it has and a few others like crawl control or lock that diff and do donuts until it explodes. Call tow truck and tow it home, wash it then call Toyota care. Problem solved.
