I'm just stating that based on what I see and hear on a daily basis at the dealership I work for. And I'm not sure if this is what you meant but I do not work for Toyota corporate. I've been working in a shop turning wrenches for almost 15 years on these vehicles that we all choose to own. I in no way support the actions of Toyota corporate. In fact, I know they are heading in the direction of every other manufacturer in that they want quantity over quality.

I see your name is tachotech. I'm assuming you work for a Toyota dealer. I actually hit it off with a tech who went on the ride along with me. Very cool and down to earth guy. He seemed genuine in his efforts to help me. He went to submit his TAS case and got shot down. I never heard from him again. But he fully acknowledged the sound as an issue, he even told me the new Tacoma's are junk compared when to when he was hired in the 90s, very old school tech with a surfer attitude.

That's got to bug someone who works for Toyota knowning corporate is weaseling their way out claims and warranty.

I hear ya. I'm just that kind of tech too. I tell customers all the time to hang onto their older vehicles. Most either don't want to put money into them every 6 months or want the latest tech options and get new vehicles. I'll agree that the vehicle quality has declined. I've been told it happens in waves depending on who Mr. Toyoda puts in charge of vehicle operations for periods of time.
And I'm sure there are plenty of corporate employees whom are ashamed of the way things are done. But like most people these days they'll turn a blind eye to assure they don't jeopardize their career. Same thing goes on at the service level. Only difference is the techs are getting fed up with how we are being treated by Toyota and the dealers.

    Dude,

I even showed them prior invoices for the same issue, where the work was performed and honored. Its like they're following a script on the issue which is to state its " normal". It's crazy. I even told the lady from corporate how can you ensure my safety? " Oh we know about the issue, there has never been a failure. Its well documented for warranty". Crazy. Its like a big FU as a customer.

It is very possible there is an actual fix for this with updated parts in the works. I really hate that they aren't up front with owners. But I know they can't have people bombarding the dealerships for repairs when word gets out there is a problem. For example, the airbag recalls. We have vehicles that have been sitting in our lot for over a year because the customer refused to continue to drive it until it was fixed. At $1k a month in loaner costs to toyota I can understand them not wanting people panicking with every other issue there might be.
If you can try a few other dealerships. You might find one that won't even look into the service history and repair it without hesitation.

Your better off just paying to have it done.

At this point why push for a new one? Guys on here for new ones and still howl.

Want it fixed right pay someone to pull it and confirm.
If I had the howl it would've been done already. You really want the idiotic techs that only know how to bolt new parts in and change oil doing it? Get a shop that works on diffs all the time.

I get the noise might be annoying but no one has had failure yet due to howl. Otherwise you'd have no issue

@EMT760, that first invoice from Durango Motor Company is mine. Just so you know my howl returned after about 300 miles. The replacement diff is louder than the original. They offered to replace again. Based on everything I read on here, I opted to wait and see what Toyota does. I am afraid I might actually get a diff that is even worse. I am 33k miles now.

Edit to add; my wait was also based on the field service tech telling me they thought the issue was the pinion bearing surface. Somewhere buried in TW is my post with exactly what he said. It was over a year ago....

What a bummer! I'm a little more on the fence about buying a 2018. How hard is it to get a rear diff to not howl? My '02 has no issues close to the Turd gens. What to do...which year models are affected by the howl?

Or at least drive it a bit till it makes a TON of noise.

Damn, that's actually not a half bad idea...:burnrubber:

Nah...he was counting down the min till it was lifted this morning, and then he was right back at it.
I don't see him in the banned members thread, so I don't know if he got another hammer in record fashion, or realized it was a better place without him and bowed out on his own.

Sorry for your troubles. Check your state’s Lemon Law. Just remember that because Toyota says it is normal does not make it normal or else all a manufacturer would have to do is say the defect is a “normal characteristic of the vehicle” to avoid any/all Lemon Law claims. GM tried it on me and they failed - epically.

    Can’t you drain the diff
    Burn it up

Fill it up right outside the dealership

    Show them it’s burned
    But has fluid

    Get new diff ?
