^^^^ hes right. in my 2011 ive used 4WD a lot and if you disengage it on a hill, where a load is being put on the gears, it will make a clunk. ive had it happen several times, and it still goes good as new.

Mine only made a loud clunk once and that was a couple of weeks ago when it was like 5 degrees out and I just started the and had forgot to take it out of 4hi and when I did it clunked pretty loud.

Mine clunks when disengaging 4H to 2WD. I usually stop and go to neutral then turn the switch. 50/50 on whether I get a clunk or not.

My '04 does it too...I wouldn't call it a "loud" clunk but it's definitely noticeable, doesn't sound bad though so I never worry about it.

After a little searching I found this thread, as I accidentally caused this to happen today in my truck. My driveway has a pretty steep incline, and living in snowy Northern Ontario, I often have to shift into 4hi to reverse up my driveway.
Today we had some wet slippery snow fall, and my truck wasn't making it up in 2wd. So, I switched it not 4hi. The switch into 4x4 is usually seamless, with just a light click, today, for whatever reason there was a bit of a delay, and as I was easing up the hill, my rear tires started to spin at the same time the transferase engaged resulting in a pretty loud thunk and slight jarring of the truck. 4x4 engaged fine however, and made it up my driveway. Engaged and disengaged a few times to make sure everything was still working once parked (seems ok). Will be doing a t-case oil change soon, be interesting to see if there are any metal chips or shavings in the drained oil. I suspect everything will be fine, but it's always a little disconcerting when something like this happens.

From what I have read on this topic, it appears this may happen on occasion without causing harm, but best to avoid this scenario if possible due to the added stress on components.

my 2015 hardly ever engages into 4hi unless im rolling at least a little bit.
i have a friend who only engages 4hi at a dead stop

but my truck usually always makes the "clunk" going from 4hi to 2hi

Mine does it as well, not every time though, sometimes i'll go from 4H to 2H and no bang. Other times i'll be stopped, then start rolling then "Bang" disengage.

I have been using my dclb sport like this since new. I am just wondering if synthetic gear lube or an additive like Lucas would help with the transfer. My truck is a 15 with 40 k and has done this since new.

Maybe 1 out of 10 times it'd make a clunk when coming out of 4WD which is normal, just means thing got bound up and are releasing like a spring when it comes out of 4WD. How often does it happen OP? if you engage and then disengage while driving in a PERFECTLY straight line for a bit does it do it?

Bought my 15 brand new. Makes a quiet clicking noise going INTO 4wd. Going back to 2wd I get a loud CLUNK. I’ve always known it to be normal.

I'm running General Gabbers AT2 265/70r17 on my stock 06 4x4. Excellent rubber. I have never ran BFG's on my truck, but I can always tell when someone on the highway is running them coming up beside me cuz those BFG's are loud! That's what sold me on Grabbers. Someone reviewed them stating they have run both BFG's and Grabbers, and reported a huge difference in noise.

As far as the loud thud that I can also feel, I get that too, and I always feel like I'm gonna jack up something. I think that I have gotten it out once without a thud. I have tried many things, but I'm gonna follow the "give it some acceleration, let off, and take it out of H4" on my next go. Anyone found a round about speed that the taco likes coming out of H4?

I sometimes get quiet disengage by driving up gentle incline at a crawl, 1-3 mph, with just a bit of power. But not totally consistent .
