Mine always clunks in and out of 4. I figure it's not a big deal but I also don't use 4 as much as you probably do

Sometimes I get noise and feel it, sometimes it's smooth. I think you just have to figure out what's normal for your truck. As long as mine is no louder than normal, I don't worry about it. I would expect some noise and sometimes feel it as normal.

I use my 4WD almost every 2-3 weeks since new, and it's always been that way.

Mine had a pretty good clunk going from 2hi to 4hi or 4hi to 2hi on the fly or stopped until I switched over to Redline MT-90 75W90 Gl-4. Smooth as can be now.

The clunk is normal, some binding is going to happen no matter what in certain conditions and you feel/hear a thud or clunk. Other times it's buttery smooth. Nothing to worry about

MY 17 OR does this too. Thus why I am on this thread right now. It seems that when I am on the dirt it never does it but when I am driving in a straight line on pavement, get to a stop light, then disengage, I get a loud clunk and this morning it actually jolted the truck a bit forward. I am not always able to make it out to the dirt so to keep the seals wet I just drive a 10 mile straight paved road into work. I just changed the transfer case oil a week ago with Redline MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4. This was recommended by Redline for our trucks. I have read on other forums about different vehicles and they have the same thing. I still have no issues or warnings going 4Hi to 4Lo or 2Wd to 4Hi or 4Hi to 2Wd just that loud ass bang on the hard surfaces. I guess it is normal but damn I still do not like it lo.

Kind of sounds like what my truck does ifi allow a lot of binding to happen in 4wd

Ok guys, for what it’s worth, maybe this will help someone…….
My truck would go into 4H like butter, but was making a clunk when going back to 2H.
Here is what I discovered….. my truck prefers to be in D and moving but no gas. If I am sitting still and in D or P and try to go from 4H -> 2H it will often just “blink” then if you try to move while the light is blinking then you are asking for the Clunk! So, if you’re sitting still and the light is blinking, switch back to 4H and begin moving , then let off gas while coasting and switch to 2H and it is smooth as silk. Hope that helps someone!

Merry Christmas and thanks to all on Tacomaworld for taking time to put information on here, either personal experiences with your trucks or advice.
This thread, in particular, has helped put my mind at ease that I'll likely not need to go shopping for a transfer case. That 4h to 2h clunk nearly ruined my holiday. :D

Thanks to all and best wishes for the New Year!

Mine clunks undermload. Think of shifting a bicycle when going uphill.
