    Hey everyone, new member here.

Just got my 2017 TRD-OR DCLB a few months ago. I've taken it on some light trails, just enough to get it into 4x4, and noticed something weird. When I use the automatic transmission's manual gear selection while in 4x4, and select 1st gear, and slow to a stop or try to start moving from a stop, I hear a really loud "springy" noise from the front end and the vehicle won't move. If I put the shifter back in drive or select a higher gear it works, it seems to only happen with 1st. It's really loud and a bit scary that the vehicle doesn't move in this case, and also sad because I often want to shift into 1st for speed control when in 4x4.

I gave the site and Google a search but couldn't find any threads on this topic already. Has anyone else noticed anything like this? I am taking the truck up to the mountains this weekend and I am going to try to get a video/audio recording of what happens.

Yeah it's in 4H when this happens. Haven't tried 4L yet, will do that this weekend. Definitely thinking of bringing it to dealer. Want to get a recording of the sound though so they don't just tell me "we couldn't find anything wrong" and waste a lot of my time.

That's really nice :) I've been driving 4x4s for 15 years. Just because I have a new Tacoma doesn't mean I haven't wheel'd many other vehicles. Thanks for your help.

Starting to suspect it could be the VSC, ABS, or TRAC systems. Found another TW post related to a "springy" noise caused by ABS (literally sounds like a cartoon spring, "booooeeiing"). The first time this happened I was on a steep rutted out down hill, and the second time was in the sand at Pismo. I suspect it's the VSC which remains activated in 4H and that the system detected the wheel slippage and started engaging the brakes. The springy noise could be the brake system fighting me giving it gas, and the lack of forward motion would be due to braking rather than a disconnect in the transfer case or 4WD actuation of the front axle/hubs (if it has that kind of thing, still new to the Tacoma world, but my '94 Monty has this and it gets jammed sometimes). Or it could be a hill-assist thing. I'll just have to experiment more to figure it out.

Soooo... may just be a normal Tacoma noise that I should get used to, and probably I should turn off the VSC when in low gear on dirt roads/sand in 4H (looks like it turns off automatically in 4L) or use the MTS. I'll investigate more this weekend on the trails around Alpine Lake, CA.

Yeah, I'm not here much anymore, so it's why I don't know either. Just knew he was back for a day and then out again.

My 16 3rd gen does not do that so I don't know about normal. I recently had it in the Oregon dunes and was using sport mode frequently in 4hi and have not heard that sound.

Is Trac control completely off i.e. neutral and hold down the Trac control button until the system has completely deactivated? Curious if your having some kind of front end problems where the ABS system is trying to compensate for some kind of mechanical failure like a front diff or CV issue?

Is it a sound similar to the noise the ABS system makes using crawl controll?

If you start to roll backwards even a little bit the traction system makes one hell of a racket. Were you reproducing this all the time or was it a one year thing?
