I think I would have done the same thing in your situation. Sucks not going the distance. Especially with the known reliability of these trucks. Having said that any one of us could have suddenly faced that same scenario. Being a Toyota product I like to think that our chances are somewhat reduced. Please keep us informed as what happens next and how the repair quality was moving forward.

Well you’re not really going to recoup any of the money you put in. But it seems like the best option other than offloading the truck broken.
But you mentioned you’d need a truck and have no other means to buy another so… it seems like this is as decent of an outcome as you can expect

    How long for the repair?
Maybe you could convince the dealer to give you a free or cheap loaner while yours is in the shop..

Yeah not really recoup as in get back money but more so in not having a car note for a few more years.

They said 10-12 days depending how long it takes for all the parts to come in. I have a vehicle I'm able to use in the short term.
Yeah, just a bad time in the market for this to happen. 3-4 years ago it most likely would have been a completely different story.

    Is what it is.

Keep us posted on the progress. Toyota “reliability” aside this thread and a few 25k msrp engine replacement posts really make me consider extended warranties.
I can’t believe a 2 year old truck would essentially get totalled due to engine repairs. This is unheard of in the car industry.

for ex a few buddies blew up vw gti motors that are fairly complex with turbos etc … the costs were 5-7k… Toyota is doing some major fuckery

That's just it. You're not adding to the value of the truck as it sat prior, but you definitely bring it up versus it broken. Maybe 12K worth, maybe not. But having the use of it is worth something..especially in (as @Loudog504 said) today's market plus not wanting another loan right now.

Just an update. Parts came in on 2/17. They put it together on 2/23, had it running, test drove it Thursday 2/24 and it was leaking oil from the timing cover. They said they had to pull the engine and reseal it...

So I was told the truck would be ready by Tuesday (2/28)... Called Tuesday and I was told that it will be ready today (Wednesday 3/1). I called this afternoon to see if it was ready to pick up and the service advisor said he couldn't get an answer from the tech on what was left to do, that it was still on the lift and the service advisor wasnt sure when it would be ready... They offered me a loaner car since it most likely wont be ready...I guess until next week ?

My luck... Wouldn't say what was wrong and both the Service advisor and Service manager have an off day tomorrow.

Holy Fu$k. You would think that in your situation the dealership would be making sure that their best Tech was assigned to this very expensive repair and would be making sure everything was completely and absolutely 100% and then some before you came to pick up your truck. Then they casually tell you the big bad tech doesn’t know when it would be ready? What a disappointment. If you didn’t need a truck I think I would dump it after the repair and move on. I know shit happens but but WTF!

Give them a chance to make it right . It’s a mechanical thing, if done right it will be fine. Everyone flips out about a motor coming out and they shouldn’t . It’s really not a big deal if you have the equipment. The issue probably was the timing cover sealant , my guess . It needs to be done right . The cover needs to be completely clean and free from oil and the block the same .

Get it back and drive across town to another Toyota dealer and trade that pup in before the repair gremlins show up.

You say you had the timing resealed 40K ago. Wondering if they got crazy with the sealant. It would not be the first engine to be starved for oil because sealant got into the oil pickup. $12.5K is a lot of money to put into a engine. I understand the dilemma thou....good luck.

Got it back and noticed a few noises. Just curious if this is normal.

First is when you press the gas you get a little air pushing kind of noise right before the rev.
    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/CcGEQkuE-jk

Second is a noise and pretty rough shaking even inside the truck when you turn the truck off. (this has gotten better in the last week)
    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Gx16dVJeq38

Also, this bolt was missing. I pointed it out and was told nothing goes there. I believe there was another mount with a similar bolt missing on the other side as well. Just curious if that is true? (see photo)

Otherwise everything as of now seems fine. They forgot to do a lot of the the finishing things like connect hoses to brackets, missing bracket for the AC line, bolt missing for the oil dip stick, broke the plastic engine cover, few tabs on the grill... I'm sure a few other things I didn't notice that hopefully they catch.

They gave you a warranty correct ? I thought you said they did . I would just pay more attention now and make sure all is good . If something pops up bring it right back and let them iron out the little things . You should be ok
