    Hey guys,

I’m trying to learn about my new ‘18 sport 4x4 and the different modes. I’ve read the sticky thread on it but still a little confused.

Seems I have TRAC in 4H but not auto lsd as it is in 2H. However trac is still similar but not as good as an auto lsd or real lsd in 4H, correct?

The other question I have is what’s the difference between a real aftermarket (or factory option on other mfgs) lsd and an auto lsd using the brakes like our Tacoma’s? Is there a reason tacos don’t use mechanical ones like say a Dodge Ram? I’m asking because my buddy (with a 2014 ram) asked if my truck has an lsd or not and said most trucks should have them. I said I think lol.

    This stuff is confusing!

ok, missed that. why don't you see if @David K will jump in for clarification. the reason i posted that is, iirc, your questions are answered in that thread. maybe I'm thinking of another thread?

All 3rd Gens have computer simulated Limited Slip.

Ok, so then the lsd that’s an option on the Rams like my buddies is the same kind of thing as the computer simulated slip? I know the rams have some brake boosted kind of thing AND an added lsd as an option (but not standard)

The last Tacoma with a Mechanical Limited Slip was around a 08 or 09 Sport.

The truck has a simulated limited slip, it does not have a real LSD.

The difference is a real LSD will force both tires to rotate in the same direction at all times. If you are at a stop and punch it, a real LSD will spin both rear tires simultaneously providing better traction. A simulated LSD waits till traction is lost and then try’s to respond to the excessive spinning tire by braking it. If you are at a stop and punch it with an auto LSD, one tire will spin while the auto LSD then detects the spinning tire and uses the brakes on that tire to try and send power to the non-spinning tire.

An electronic auto LSD is a reactionary traction aid and not as good as a real mechanical LSD for increasing traction. An auto LSD also has no parts cost on vehicles with stability control since it just uses the existing braking system, compared to the added expense of a mechanical LSD unit.

The process might be different but the results are the same, power is applied to the opposite wheel when slipping / spinning is detected.

Thanks guys. So if you take a Dodge Ram that has traction control but not the added lsd option (its an option but doesn’t come standard on many trims, just looked at their site) is that the same as our auto lsds? Or are our auto lsds better than a non-lsd open diff ram that just has traction control? My buddy and I were trying to figure it out.

Sounds like your buddy's truck is pretty much equipped the same as your upcoming Sport so the end result will be similar.

So on all tacos, this auto lsd is only in 2wd correct? In 4wd it’s just trac or atrac on OR/Pro

If you do a search on here there are some Threads that have spreadsheets showing what happens in each mode, but the best advice is whenever you get your truck go out and experiment with it.

    here’s what I’m confused about.

Dodge Ram = traction control and optional rear lsd.

Tacoma = traction control and auto lsd that’s on all models?

I’ve been reading a lot, just trying to figure the dodge/Tacoma difference with my buddy as he sort of feels his truck is the king of all trucks.

So then, auto LSD in 2wd or TRAC OFF (no engine regulation) in 4hi is better than an open diff, but not quite as good as a true mechanical LSD?
