LSD Oil

    2015 Sport - ready to change differential and transfer case oils.
    No LSD sticker on rear and no mention of LSD oil in the manual. Only reference in the manual states: Toyota Genuine Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent.

    So my question is do I need LSD oil/additive?

    Why are you changing the oil in these?? It's by no means needed or required...

    Don't listen to ^ guy. You definitely want to change it, every 15k is a good measure.

    To answer the OP, no you don't need an additive. Just make sure it is 75-85 or 75-90 that meets GL5 standards or better.

    Last long??? Ask the first gen guys how many times they change those oils... hell I've got almost 250k on mine with 1 swap because I swamped it... and it's still fine!

    Ok... i'm out then.. I know not everyone has grown up around mechanics but it seems like we all understand that the suggested service intervals (minus oil changes) are just bogus..

    Did you noticed all of the metal shavings that cover the drain plug magnet? Total worth the $40 in gear oil just to get those shavings out IMO

    Not sure what the 2015 manual says, but the Warranty & Maintenance Guide for my 2013 recommends "inspecting" the transmission oil every 30K miles, but doesn't recommend changing it, under "normal" operating conditions. (Not a good plan.) It does, however, recommend "changing" the transmission oil every 30K miles under "special" operating conditions (i.e., Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading).

    In spite of all that, I also recommend changing dino oil every 30K miles (and synthetic every 60K miles).

Nfab front bumper with KC apollo lights, bed lights, bluesea systems fuse box....lots of painted stuff.
    Changed mine every 50 or so. Not hard to do at all.. takes about 20ish minutes if you know exactly what you are doing.

    I was talking about the differentials and transfer case, not the transmission.

    As a trained mechanic we typically know what we can get away with. But I would never recommend my behavior to another owner. Too many variables and not my personal responsibility. I think they call it "preventative maintenance." Similar to how they teach us to do both sides wheel bearings (& calipers) when only one goes out. It's not a matter for a practicing KIA.

    OP, Mobil 1 is a popular option. No, you don't need the additive. If the only oil on the shelf has additive, it won't hurt.

    I just had my 15 Manual out the other day as I was doing the 15K Maintenance and it had changing out Front and Rear Diff under "Special" section.

    The regular interval is 30. I tow and haul a lot. At 30 the rear is ready for a change. The front isn't usually, but I often do anyway.

    2015 Tacoma Owners Manual rear diff calls for:

    Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent

    LT = non slip differential

    No mention of LX - Toyota's LSD oil in the 2015 owners manual
