I think auto-lockers would not be too bad daily driving, only concern would be snow, it's my understanding that these things lock upon acceleration, correct me if I wrong here, so shouldn't be that unpredictable, just let off the gas around turns and you're golden

Perhaps torque is going to both wheels but they're not locked together? That's the only way I can see it locking offroad and spinning correctly during turns... I want a locker that will get me out of the mud when one tire is stuck but will allow me to drive normally on the road. I don't really want an lsd because I've heard it doesn't do much.

Is there one you recommend for light offroad use? I don't go play in the snow or mud very OFTEN but when I do, I would like to know I won't be stranded if I am careful enough

The auto lockers work on load. When you coast they will unlock, apply a load to the ring gear then it will lock.

If I had to choose to upgrade from an open diff either selectable locker... Or something like the Detroit trutrac (helical gear LSD ) which would compliment the auto LSD brake function really well!

What do you mean by the trutrac complimenting the auto lsd? I thought you would be replacing your oem lsd. I have neither, completely open

So... would an aftermarket lsd not completely replace your oem lsd?

If you have a mechanical oem lsd, yes. For 2nd gen Tacoma, i believe 2005-2008 has mechanical lsd for rear diff in TRD Sport model. Not sure about Prerunner models. For 2008+,rear diffs are open diffs, with electronic control TRAC that I believe modulates the brakes on the wheel side that is spinning, allowing more torque to be applied overall without spinning.

    exactly.

The auto lsd function is actually rather impressive. With everything turned off there are many certian things you just cant get up. turn all the traction aids on, and you cant get enough wheel spin to do anything due to engine regulation.

But tap the traction control button once, and we get un regulated engine, and a simulated LSD with the use of the brakes and it will actually dig both wheels in and get ya moving.

Pair that simulated LSD action with something like the detroit trutrac which needs a little bit of resistance on the slipping tire to transfer to the gripping tire, and you have a win win.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
You have 07 truck so look on junkyard for rear end from TRD sport or DCLB with limited slip from factory.
That thing is hands down best limited slip I ever owned.
This thing works even when one wheel is the air (0 traction)

Wow thanks a lot guys. I get it now. So I should find a rear axle from a newer sport that has the auto lsd? Any way I can get the Trac control too? Lastly, I could pair that with a detroit lsd or other aftermarket for a nice setup

2005-2007/8 TRD Sport =mechanical LSD = direct swap.

2008+ TRD Sport = open diff +electronic sensors, control unit, brake modulators, wiring harness = lots of stuff from various areas of the truck to get and install.

or add an aftermarket unit into your current open diff.

    1. How do you think the oem 05-07 mech lsd compares to a nice aftermarket one?

    2. how does it fare against the newer auto lsd PLUS an aftermarket lsd?

    3. Are the 08+ features even worth the install to you?

The only way it would be an lsd is if someone peeled that sticker off the diff and if it is, I sure don't want an lsd because this thing gets stuck in nothing!

Thanks for the suggestion, I know I'm asking a lot of questions.

Agreeable on both points. I think I'll look for the best lsd and most likely true trac

Alright, I'm planning to start the install tomorrow after work. I know I saw a thread on here detailing how to install a lunchbox locker in a Tacoma. Now I can't find it...

I think I pretty much get the idea, but I wanted to verify first. Does anyone know where to find that thread?

Thank you. I have all of e tools I need. I just don't have the Tacoma specific torque numbers. The instructions with the lockers are universal...

I think the thread I found last time had the torque specs. I though I book marked it, but I guess not.

I would honestly prefer something like the detroit trutrac over the OEM mechanical LSD, as the trutrac has no clutch packs to wear out... the OEM does, also the trutrac will lock up MUCH more positively compared to the OEM especially with the aid of the auto lsd function found on later trucks.

Also if your truck doesnt have VSC / trac.... theres no way your going to feasibly get it installed out of a newer truck
