    Very nice. I buy my vanilla beans online, I try to buy 10-20 beans at a time. Keep them sealed and they hold up pretty well, nothing quite like high quality beans and extracts (especially if you make your own) for great flavors. I tend to go more with Bourbon Vanilla beans, I like the flavor and the price point.

    It's the purity of the ingredients. No gargum or other things added for texture or to stabilize or yada yada yada. Anything we can make at home ourselves I usually prefer. Going to be making a bath or two this weekend. My grandfather used to make a banana ice cream that was awesome. Wish I had the recipe for that. Used to make it the old fashioned way like above, crank crank crank. I still prefer the easier method now :)

    I'll have to check on line for the beans. My GF has a bottle of the bourbon vanilla bean extract we used. I don't know the difference, just know it is some damn good ice cream. If a bean makes it even better then I'm all for it.

    Not nearly as loud as one of those hybrid old style machines (electric but you add salt and ice). We have friends with one of those and they place it outside when making ice cream. I was expecting the one I got it to be louder than it is, but it is by no means stealthy. I run in on the kitchen counter and can sit in the living room (open to kitchen) and watch TV, but you definitely hear it.

    Back before he passed my Dad made banana nut icecream by simply adding three well ripened bananas (mashed with a fork) and a package of pecan pieces to his regular vanilla recipe. IMO it was the best ever.

    I always tell people we don't NEED many things but that doesn't mean we don't WANT them. :)

    Some of them are loud, the one we have isn't horrible you can hear it but it's not like you can't have a conversation with it running.

    Loud isn't a bad thing, you keep it behind a closed door and you can still hear it to know when it's stopped and done.

    We debated getting one as well. How many appliances do we have tucked away that we used for a time then didn't? Pressure cooker, crock pot (good in the winter), bread maker, etc... But we do eat ice cream on a regular basis and the idea of making our own - any flavor, simple ingredients (no preservatives, artificial color, etc) appealed to us as well. So we decided to get a smaller, simpler one that was less expensive. It has a lot of good reviews and was only a little over $40, so why not? So far it's worked out awesome. Ice cream better than any commercial brand we've had, it's fun and very easy to make. This is the one we have;

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041A3KPC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    There are different types of ice cream makers: the kind above does not automatically stop. The style we have is a double wall container with a gel inside that freezes (keep it in the freezer). You pour your mix in, the container spins and the mix freezes. It only takes about 15 minutes, max 20. You just keep an eye on it and when the ice cream mix has solidified you move it to a continer, then the freezer. Pretty simple and quick.

    Just made vanilla ice cream using real vanilla beans. Came out damn good. We made a very thin chocolate cake, put the ice cream between two pieces and voila! Ice Cream Sammich's! Big one is in the freezer. Will cut it into smaller squares tomorrow.

    Very nice. Looks really good. We are hopefully picking up a freezer this weekend so that we can actually make some ice cream.

    They are soooo much better than anything store bought. Next batch of Sammich's will be vanilla with chocolate sauce swirled in and banana chunks.

    If you're going to be addicted to something, making and eating your own ice cream is not a bad choice!

    No sir I cannot disagree there. We picked up our new chest freezer yesterday. Got to get the area in our laundry room cleared out so I can get it in there today or tomorrow. Once that's at temp I will be tossing the ice cream maker bowl in there to prep for making some ice cream this coming weekend. Tried out the latest batch of home made vanilla extract this past week, mmmmm mmmmm good stuff.

    I'm right on the verge of getting a chest freezer myself. Between the ice cream and the smoker the extra space would come in handy. The just opened WinCo is selling tri-tip for $3 a pound and ribs for $0.99 a pound. I'd really like to stock up but currently don't have the space...

    What model/size did you get?
