Winter4x4 was a good time. I ran out of talent a few times and put it on its side twice. Luckily no damage besides a tail light. image000001.jpg image000005.jpg IMG_4303.jpg IMG_4312.jpg IMG_4308.jpg

I finished the red 4door I’ve been building for a guy as well. It turned out good I think. Very similar to mine suspension wise and also fit some 3.0x16s on the rear. IMG_1683.jpg IMG_1700.jpg IMG_1680.jpg IMG_1677.jpg

I also ordered some prps for the 83 and got them mounted. In the process of making a new winch bumper that’s a little more slimline and will have some mounts for a snow plow I got. IMG_6301.jpg IMG_6310.jpg IMG_6309.jpg IMG_4652.jpg IMG_4650.jpg

That’s pretty much caught up. I ordered a new power steering pump for mine from radial dynamics to hopefully improve the steering and I’ve been collecting some parts for a new build… but that’ll come later. A few shots of both Tacomas together IMG_5699.jpg IMG_5709.jpg IMG_5655.jpg

Been doing a bunch of odd ball jobs as well. IMG_4884.jpg IMG_0762.jpg IMG_0763.jpg IMG_0767.jpg IMG_0768.jpg Made two matching trailer boxes that I thought turned out well. Guy had them powered coated to match his trailers he rents out.

Rubicon was exciting to say the least. We cruised up on Saturday and parked the tow rigs at Tahoma. Cruised around to loon lake Sunday and started around 1130. Passed a ton of people getting towed out and the trail in general was just busy. Made it to buck no issue and slept the night. Monday we went to the springs and our usual spot at the slabs was taken so we went to dirty dozen. Me being an idiot went to far to the left and found a deep hole. Fan blade smacked the water and truck died. It didn’t want to restart so my dad pulled me out and it eventually started. That’s when I found the hole in the radiator.

Got it parked and let it cool off and got the radiator pulled. We used the jb weld we had (3 tubes) and it still leaked pretty good. Some old guys gave us a tub of bondo and said it’s great for radiator repairs but it was a little old and dried out. We tried some radiator stop leak but nothing was working. We used it the best we could but still somehow managed to miss a small hole in the dual core and it leaked to much to get up Cadillac and out on. Tuesday we ran out to Tahoma in my dad’s jeepster, grabbed the spare fan blade I had in the Ram and then went to sparks to summit racing and got an identical radiator from them. Ran back to Tahoma. Took the jeepster In and by 1pm the new radiator was in.

We planned to hang out Wednesday but caretaker st the springs said a big group was coming in for the jamboree so we left around 9 and made it to Tahoma staging are with no issues only to find my camper door had been smashed in by a bear and the camper ransacked. Looked like he smelt some gum and a few mountain house meals I missed. He had a good time tearing the cabinets open and drank some beers. Only real damage is the door and cabinet doors and all fixable. Only damage to the truck was the inside of the tailgate which I won’t know how bad it is till I take the camper back off. We left early Thursday morning for the long drive home and thankfully no more issues.

Overall it was more issues than we like but all part of it. We had fun and I’ll flush the radiator and do a new thermostat and it’ll be ready for the next trip.IMG_6482.jpg IMG_6491.jpg IMG_6492.jpg IMG_6495.jpg IMG_6497.jpg

Is that bondo on the radiator lol?

What happened to that camper - a bear or break in or trail damage?

    What rad is that?

Man, I thought that looked like trail damage at first, but then I was like, wait a minute, bear... One time in Mammoth in the summer I was asleep in a motel room next to an animal proof trash can outside my open window. Like 3 in the morning a huge bang woke me up and hear a deep breathing three-four feet away from my head out the window. Frikin scary haha.

That sucks for your friend - does he know what smell was enticing the bear?

Rad was a Griffith one. The one I got from summit was identical. Literally couldn’t tell the difference.

we’ve had issues with bears on the trail before. They ate most our food at buck island one year and was brushing against our tents lol

camper was mine. I’m guessing it was a pack of gum I missed in a backpack or a mountain house meal. He ate those and had a few beers lol

:frusty: Oh that sucks man, sorry to hear it.

That would have been unnerving with bears brushing up against your tent out there.

Is the griffith rad the one you've been experiencing overheating issues with?

I haven’t had overheating issues as long as I keep the mechanical fan. When I swapped to an electric (more to trouble shoot the red truck I built as it had an electric fan and was having overheating issues) it would overheat on long hills at highway speeds.

the Griffith and summit ones where identical and the summit one “bolted in” to the mounts I made for the Griffith one. I personally think the radiators I put in are just undersized to run an electric fan. I think if I went to a triple core and maybe a 2-4 in wider one, it wouldn’t be an issue. My truck I could go 2 inches wider but that’s it because of the steering box

Forgot that prior to the rubicon I also swapped in a new radial dynamics power steering pump that does 4gpm vs the old psc I had did 2.8. Didn’t make a huge difference at first I thought but aired down I quickly realized how much better it was. Was able to steer no matter what the tires wheee on at idle and whenever they where pushed against something.

I also mounted some rotopaxs and a quick release fire extinguisher in the bed. I picked up a few small 8 in spal fans and mounted it to the front to help cool the truck when going slow. It was never an issue but just helps a little.

and after years and years of no overflow on the coolant and power steering, I finally mounted one.

in some preventative maintenance after breaking some u joints at moab, I replaced the carrier bearing and other u joints and found the flange at the rear axle was cracked. Got it swapped out. IMG_6397.jpg IMG_6421.jpg IMG_6469.jpg IMG_6398.jpg IMG_6472.jpg

I broke one of the ears off the skid steer cylinder so made a new. It’s 1.5x.25 wall sleeved with 1.75x.120 wall and a flat spot milled and grease zirk. See if that lasts. I then also picked up a mini excavator for some house projects and I’ll be making some attachments soon for that here soon as well IMG_6350.jpg IMG_6344.jpg IMG_6352.jpg IMG_6457.jpg
