I've had many decades of experience driving vehicles with manual transmissions without any problems, but I am having challenges properly downshifting my 2016 Tacoma six speed, especially when downshifting from fifth to fourth, because at least a third of the time, I end up in second. The detents in downshifting seem vague... Fortunately, I am running at low speeds when I downshift.

Is this just a matter of the learning curve or could it be that there is a problem with the tranny? I truck has less than 500 miles on it.

    Thanks!

I think it is a learning curve, took me awhile to get use to my 15 from my 02, both 5spds. Plus that is brand spanking new.

Took a few hundred miles to break in for me, plus just getting used to the spacing. I was having some difficulty upshifting to 3rd and down to 2nd for a bit but no issues anymore and I only have 800 miles on it so far. When you downshift to 4th try just letting the shifter center itself after you pull it down from 5th then ease it down to 4th instead of trying to "aim" it maybe. Also, are you rev matching? It will be more difficult if not going by how this trans felt before it broke in.

It took a little while for mine to break in and also for me to learn how to use it. Personally, if I was you I would give it a little bit of time. I've found that this transmission, while not as easy as my little Honda cars, is very nice for a truck manual transmission.
