I'm pretty sure in a 1st gen, only the 4cyl came with manual hubs and only up to a specific year before they were all made with ADD.

I get 22-23 mpg mixed daily driving my 97 on 33"s. I have no doubts I could get mid to upper twenties pure highway driving.

I come close to 24mpg (not just there yet tho) mix use highway/city but we do have the worst roads in Cali. My suspension needs work, I can see maybe adding an mpg or 2 but I don't think it would ever get upto 27.

I also must respectfully call bullshit. I converted mine to manual hubs a few years ago and saw no MPG difference. Since I bought my 1st gen in 2015, I've gotten a consistent 20 city/22-23 highway no matter the state of modifications.

I would say I’m resurrecting a dead thread, but the last post wasn’t al that long ago! Might be hijacking though...

Here’s my question: do you have to press the bearings out of the hub to convert from ADD to manual lockers? Also, what all do you need to make the switch? I’ve looked around at local pullaparts, but I haven’t had luck finding a hub/spindle/CV assembly with manual lockers for a quick swap. I’d have to use my existing spindles. SO! What all is needed for the convert?

They use different wheel bearings. You can use your existing spindles if you deal with that issue. Other than that you just need manual hub CV axles, the correct Aisin hubs and a hose clamp to lock your ADD actuator in 4WD. But it's an easier swap if you can score a complete non-ADD front axle assembly.

It seems like the hubs have to be off a Tacoma, but just Incase...

Can I use locking hubs off of a 89’ toyota truck on my 2002 4x4? (No e locker, manual, no abs)

There’s 4 for sale down down here for 75 bucks.

Could hook someone else up too if they’re a fit. Headed to Utah tomorrow, going home via the Reno area eventually.

I know this is an old quote, but just for future reference to those using this thread, my 3.4L 95 model came with factory manual hubs. I have looked up the parts list by the VIN and it shows "Free Wheel" hub.

My other 95 is a 2.7L and it came with ADD.

Some of the parts are interchangable (springs, dial face, etc) with the tacoma hub parts but the body and drive gear are for sure different and do not work

That's not true. I have 1999/2000 Tacoma made in the US that has manual locking hubs.

    subbed for future.
2000 might have been the last year for manual locking hubs but I think the 2001 models built in late 2000 also had the option for manual locking hubs.

Ive been looking specifically for 2000 spindles, manual hubs and ive ran across a couple 2001's that have manual locking hubs.

Spindles are the same on Prerunners, 4x4 with manual hub, and 4x4 with ADD.

The difference is in the axle hub.

    Agreed.
Im just saying that in late 2000 early 2001 was the last year for manual locking hubs.
Also, its more cost effective if you can purchase complete spindles, knuckles, rotors, manual hubs if you can find a good deal as opposed to pressing prerunner bearings out and 4x4 bearings in and piecing a system from there.

Just waiting on a response for complete L/R assemblies for $400 from a 2000/2001.

edit: Late 2000 manual hub tacoma's that were sold as 2001's exist.
